tuesday phone rule
make the lock screen boring
no widgets
no news
no weather rabbit holes
no shortcuts to apps you open on autopilot
no wallpaper that makes you want to pick it up
your lock screen should answer two questions
what time is it
who genuinely needs me
everything else can wait until you meant to unlock
monday phone rule
before you start work, put your phone somewhere you have to stand up to reach
across the room
hallway
bag
coat pocket
face down next to the keyboard is still next to the keyboard
if the interruption is worth it, you will stand up
most of them will suddenly look a lot less urgent
small sunday rule
stop scrolling on a sentence, not when you feel satisfied
there is no satisfying end point
no credits
no final page
no natural stopping cue
so pick an artificial one
one more post is the whole trap
weekend phone experiment
run one boring errand without headphones
shop
walk
train
coffee
whatever
no podcast
no music
no scrolling in the queue
it is strange how quickly a normal 20 minutes starts to feel like dead space
then your brain slowly remembers what to do with it
tiny friday phone rule
before you open any feed, say what you came for
message tom
check the train
find the address
post the thing
if you cannot name a reason, put it back down
sounds stupid
works because half the time the answer is nothing
your thumb arrived before your brain did
home screen test
every app on the first screen should have a job you can name in 3 seconds
maps
messages
calendar
notes
bank
camera
fine
anything where the real job is “give me something to look at” gets moved off the first screen
small bit of friction
surprisingly annoying
which is usually a sign it was doing something
i’m starting to think reducing screen time has the same problem as building products
you cannot predict the perfect solution from the centre
some people need blockers
some need competition
some need grayscale
some need dumb phones
some need app limits
some need public accountability
some need their phone out of the bedroom
some need to admit the problem is one specific app
the mistake is forcing one perfect system
the better approach is giving people enough visibility to notice the pattern
then enough friction to change it
try the 3-app diet for 7 days
pick the 3 apps you open on autopilot
the ones your thumb finds before your brain has joined the meeting
then make each one annoying to reach
remove it from your home screen
turn off notifications
log out after use
only use it in one room
delete it after 8pm
the goal is making the reflex trip over something before the app opens
one product decision i like in reclaim
the pause tool is optional
you find it after setup, pick the apps yourself, and it stays local on your phone
i do not want reclaim to feel like another parent hiding your phone from you
the useful bit is the moment before the automatic open
a small interruption
a breath
then you decide if you still want it
try getting a tiny bit lost without your phone
go for a walk or run somewhere familiar-ish
leave maps behind
let your brain do the navigation
worst case you ask someone for directions
best case you remember you still have an internal compass
we have outsourced even the small adventure of finding our own way home
if you want one easy screen time win today
stop taking your phone to the toilet
nothing moral about it
it is a boring default
you are already sitting there with nowhere to go
the phone turns 2 minutes into a feed session
leave it outside the bathroom once and notice how weirdly naked it feels
that feeling is the habit showing itself
i keep coming back to one number for reclaim
1,000 people saving 1,000 hours each
that is 1,000,000 hours pulled away from automatic phone use and put back into walks, sleep, family, building, sitting and thinking
small in the grand scheme of things
large enough to get up and build for
if your screen time is too high, do not start with shame
start with a map
open screen time and write down:
first app you open in the morning
app you reopen after closing it
app you use in bed
app that changes your mood fastest
app you would be embarrassed to name
app you open when you are avoiding something
now pick one
not five
one
most people do not need a total digital detox
they need to find the app acting like a leak in the day
most phone advice is obsessed with quitting
but the useful bit comes after the experiment
when the week is over, keep one rule permanently
no phone in bed
no social apps before 10am
no feeds on mobile data
no notifications from non-humans
no phone on walks
no short-form video during the week
pick the one your future self could live with on a bad day
that is the rule worth keeping
i was early to a pub for the england game and kept my phone in my pocket
a woman came in from the airport, ordered a beer, and started people watching too
soon she asked if she could join my table
we ended up having one of those weirdly useful conversations you could never plan
same pub
same screen
same room
the difference was we both looked available
a phone in your hand tells the room you are somewhere else
try the first-hour rule tomorrow
wake up and keep the phone out of it
stretch
walk
coffee
sunlight
read a few pages
sit there for a bit if you can handle it
small thing
let your own mind load before the internet gets a vote
your phone has a diet
most people think more about what they eat than what they feed their mind all day
which is strange when you look at the menu
rage
novelty
comparison
half-news
group chats
strangers arguing
people performing success
short videos designed to kill boredom instantly
then we wonder why our brain feels inflamed
you do not need to delete the internet
but before opening the same app for the 19th time, ask:
what is this feeding me?
try this next time you are waiting somewhere
keep your phone in your pocket for 2 minutes and look around
train platform
lift
restaurant
queue
pub table
sofa at home
you start noticing how little empty space is left
every spare second gets filled before it can become anything else
the 10 minute phone test
leave the house
leave the phone
walk somewhere familiar
no route tracking
no music
no photos
no emergency scroll at the traffic lights
see which part makes you most uncomfortable
