October's ASHRAE Journal Feature: Practical Applications of AI in HVAC Design & Analysis by Jacob Potoczak. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used across commercial engineering disciplines, and HVAC design is no exception. This article examines the practical integration of AI tools into core HVAC engineering tasks. A structured case study demonstrates an AI-assisted workflow for a multiuse university laboratory building and addresses critical limitations, model transparency, assumption dependency and data governance, and outlines implementation considerations for engineering firms. Throughout, the emphasis remains on AI as an augmentation tool: the licensed mechanical engineer retains responsibility for all engineering judgments and final deliverables. A MESSAGE FROM THE 2026–27 ASHRAE PRESIDENT: SARAH E. MASTON ⚽ The past few weeks have been busy with meetings and trade shows! I traveled to London to meet with CIBSE and help judge its Graduate of the Year program. While there, I also visited two ASHRAE student branches—at Loughborough University and UCL—and met many talented students and young professionals. Next, I headed to Nuremberg, Germany, for the Chillventa trade show, where it was great to connect with members and others working across Europe. From there, I traveled to Karachi, Pakistan, for the HVAC Trends 6.0 Conference and Vendor Showcase. The programs were insightful, and the “Breakfast with the President” session gave students and young professionals an opportunity to ask about my ASHRAE journey. It was an engaging conversation, and I fielded many great questions!
