‘The time to act on this is now. We must act quickly and we must be bold.’ Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth (@ChiefofAirStaff) delivered the 2026 Lord Trenchard Memorial Lecture at RUSI, calling for the RAF to harness new technologies to rapidly develop its combat capabilities. We LOVED getting these on deployment. Kids would draw the wildest stuff and teachers clearly weren't reviewing them. They would draw Army men shooting people and blood coming out and then it would say "I hope you don't die." Everyone looked forward to getting them.
There is nothing more earnest or unhinged than kids’ letters to the troops

From a previous post of mine: Lack of suitable ordnance during the 1942-45 campaigns in remote tropical mountains of New Guinea often necessitated improvisation. To attain the required elevation to attack high Japanese positions, Australian gunners often improvised. @almurray
New Guinea, near Wewak. April 1945: In stifling humidity men of Australian 2/1 Tank Attack Regiment watch one dig a pit for the gun trail of a 75mm Pack Howitzer mounted on a truck so it could attain a high elevation for firing on Japanese troops dug in on a high nearby feature.

The battle for Kyiv in 2022 showed that wars are still decided by human factors as much as technology. Russia possessed superior numbers & firepower, but #Zelensky's leadership, Ukrain forces' morale & adaptability proved decisive in saving the capital & reshaping the war.#Battle

At the commemoration I met Dennis Vernon's daughter who brought his beret and medals. She was very moved that the sappers at Bruneval were being remembered.

🧵 Ambush at AMBASI From mid-January 1943 the bedraggled few thousand survivors of Major Gen. Kensaku Oda's forces on the Papuan coast around Gona-Buna were desperately trying to escape . Their beachhead was being reduced day by day. They fled in groups by night, silently. 1/21
