Are we under-treating pain in older adults with vertebral compression fractures? 🩺🦴
A new @CJEMonline study evaluates ED pain management practices in 296 older adults (mean age 81.4 yrs) with acute fragility vertebral fractures: 👇
Key Findings:
❌ 34.5% had no initial pain score documented
❌ 10.1% received ZERO analgesia in the ED
❌ Only 4.1% had a documented pain score at discharge
❌ Allied health was consulted in only 23.3% of cases
Impact & Action:
⚠️ 30.4% were admitted (62.2% primarily for pain control), and 19.3% returned to the ED within 30 days
✅ Bottom Line: We need systematic pain scoring, routine reassessments, multimodal analgesia, and early allied health involvement to improve outcomes
