Does every lung nodule mean lung cancer—and when does it need surgery? Following Pope Leo XIV’s lung cancer diagnosis, learn when doctors monitor a lung nodule, recommend a biopsy, or consider surgery. We explain CT screening, nodule size and growth, and follow-up guidelines. Follow Larry, a fictional 68-year-old patient, inside illustrated lung tissue, an embedded nodule, and its cells. Learn the difference between screening and nodule follow-up, why biopsy is not always the first step, and which changes can prompt specialist evaluation. The incidental-nodule size guide applies to a single solid nodule in adults 35 or older, outside screening, without known cancer or weakened immunity. Multiple nodules and ground-glass/part-solid nodules follow different pathways. U.S. screening recommendations differ: USPSTF includes a 15-year quitting cutoff; ACS does not.
