Who would have thought surveillance data could be used counter productively 🙋♀️

It’s almost always incentive-aligned to hypothesize X might be broken in the future instead of predicting continued security, unless one’s own work requires X.

It's been a hard month for privacy and your right to use crypto. There's a bright spot.
Two rules at Treasury that Coin Center has vehemently opposed over the last several years have been officially withdrawn.
The "unhosted wallet rule" that would have made Coinbase and others collect information on people who are holding their own crypto is dead.
The special measure for mixers rule that would have classified effectively every step you should take to secure your privacy when using crypto (like not reusing addresses) as a "primary money laundering risk" subject to enhanced surveillance at financial institutions is dead.
This is good news and I'm happy that our work for several years to characterize these rules as bad policy and probably unconstistitutional has born fruit.
That said, the underlying statutory authority to create new, similar bad rules remains. Our work is not done and won't be until we truly protect self-custody and legitimate privacy tools in law via Congress or the Courts.
Thank you to all of those who have supported Coin Center's work, and thank you to those in Treasury who have come to understand why these rules were bad policy and should be abandoned.

Just tried this blind test by NYT on music by humans vs music by AI and I picked the AI generated song- it apparently took me longer to listen/pick the song than it took to generate it 🤦♀️ what does the future look like when AI has taste? nytimes.com/2026/10/03/arts/…
AI is changing research. It’s up to us as researchers to understand its potential and how we use it as a tool to be more productive. Technology has always disrupted entire industries and now it’s our turn.

I feel like it started to surface with the tace for the Navier-Stokes result but quickly died down. And didn't reach the right audience probably
AI is getting to the point where it can take known technologies in the literature and extend constructions using these techniques to achieve improvements on security properties; just did this (results incoming). It’s incredible.
Excited for the democratization of research in the future, a little sad how research will change, but overall faster progress gets us to where we want to be faster, regardless how we get there.

You don’t fully grasp how much of your life is tracked until you’re sitting in a courtroom, watching federal prosecutors use your digital history against you, down to your most harmless Google searches. Your entire life becomes an open book, and even your most innocent actions can be twisted into something sinister.
They get to tell the most damning version of your story. To tell yours in your own words, you have to take the stand.
Financial privacy is privacy.
From the article- Border Patrol is running secretive predictive policing units that analyze Americans’ financial activity and other data, then feed that intelligence to local police who pull people over who are not suspected of any specific crime, but which the government thinks may be worth searching, 404 Media has found.

Here's Tristan Buckmaster's statement. (You've probably seen bits of it quoted here today, but the whole thing is worth reading.)

Thank you very much @huitseeker for inspiring this work! So happy it’s useful 🤩🤩
Thanks @chelseakomlo, @benediktbuenz and Kevin Choi for Golden: this was not my first time working on a DKG implementation, but it was the most pleasant by a mile. Props to my colleagues @adr1anh and @RobinSalen who did amazing performance work on this!
Miden has open sourced golden-dkg, a package that lets committees create public and private key shares in one round, with no trusted dealer.
EHTDH1, a groundbreaking decryption scheme, provides verifiable decryption that only works for a chosen context so approval to decrypt one piece of data can't be reused to decrypt the rest.
Amazing work by the Miden team! Very excited to see Golden being useful in practice, thanks to @huitseeker for the inspiration 🙌💪🎊
