Absolute genius move by President Trump, if he secretly wants to defeat the separatist PQ government in Quebec. Despite his pronouncements on taking over Canada, I doubt he really wants to. Trump has certainly been briefed that the PQ is a minority government, and voters could swing for it or against it in the next election
The federalist parties in the National Assembly should use Trump’s announcements to say the PQ’s plan is to join the United States, if Quebec votes for independence. The one thing modern Quebec separatists dislike more than Canada is the United States
I saw this in Quebec indy pro wrestling, many years ago. The legendary International Wrestling Syndicate (IWS) in Montréal had a heel, Fred La Merveille, pushing a hardcore separatist angle with his SLI faction. Fred was furious that IWS fans spoke English instead of French. He and the SLI would grab the mic, cut pro-separatist promos in French, and declare they hated English speakers. When the PQ lost power in 2003, the SLI came out crying that it was a sad day for Quebec. And Fred was getting super over with the fans!
To get the heat back, they had Fred pledge loyalty to the USA and George W. Bush, rename his faction SLI-USA, and even wrestle dressed as Uncle Sam, while speaking French. Had a victory over a recent WWE Champ, Sami Zayn, and Evil Uno of the @AEW Dark Order. He was booed out of the building
