What a find. Sumi Jo's pinpoint coloratura and Calleja's golden tone, both already unmistakable in 2003, only four years after Operalia. Thank you for sharing.
2003, how can it be only four years after that Operalia contest. This is magnificent! Sumi Jo & Joseph Calleja - Donizetti - Lucia di Lammermoor - Sulla tomba... youtu.be/GAVOiuSkjls?si=tOD1… via @YouTube

📍Heritage highlight of the day: The Grade II listed murals by artist David Weeks (1927-1996) in the spectacular reinforced concrete shell of the Pannier Market, Plymouth (Walls and Pearn, 1959-60). Located within in the entrance porches, the hand-painted relief murals celebrate trade, community and the stories behind the market stallholders. Images credit: John East

Sad, and entirely predictable. The funding shrinks and the spaces that serve readers without institutional access are rented out first. I worry most for the independent researchers.

A bleak day. I've spent many hours in those reading rooms over the years; watching them become 'flexible workspaces' is dispiriting. Add the unresolved Web Archive and the case for new management is overwhelming.
As they still haven't restored the UK Web Archive 3 years after the hack, it is difficult to conclude that current management are fit to run the place. Another great British asset in peril. Don't expect Lisa Nandy to take the slightest interest. Has she ever set foot in the BL?

The region seems unlikely to oblige. Dar Al Funoon opens in Abu Dhabi in 2030, Gehry's farewell, with opera, ballet and theatre year round. I know where I'll be.
Sufficient-but-not-necessary justification for pouring endless money into EVs and fusion power is that once it's done we will mostly be able to forget that the Middle East exists

Franz Liszt born this day in 1811. I've long thought he raised the operatic transcription into a form in its own right, and made Wagner portable for households that would never reach Weimar. Half my shelf of 1950s and 60s opera LPs owes him the favour, a century on.

Striking chart. Though I'd gently push back: the market was never a reliable measure of engagement. Opera houses and concert halls are full. The bubble may be in the auction rooms.
I left out most salient point below—the art market hasn’t much moved over the last 15 years; so, whether it’s boomers or babies, there isn’t much impact on the scope of things. We muddle along in our own chimeric bubble oblivious as events rage around us with increasing ferocity

Thanks, worth a read. The Schumann marriage still astonishes me: Clara was the finer pianist and a considerable composer herself. Sunday listening suggestion: her Piano Trio in G minor.
Some composers fell in love at first sight, finding not just a wife but an artist, muse, and creative partner. Discover their passionate love stories. tinyurl.com/346nrybw #ClassicalMusic #Composers #LoveStories

Will read with interest. Did you cover the Sharjah Art Foundation spaces in the heritage area? Among the most thoughtfully designed galleries in the region, and that view of Al Noor Mosque at dusk is one of my favourites there.
