Since Trump will be able to veto bills, abolishing the filibuster shouldn’t be very controversial.
But it would give this new crop of Democratic senators a chance to get to work in earnest and pass popular bills that would land on Trump’s desk—putting the responsibility for rejecting them squarely on him.
ICRICT retweeted
Democrats are likely to have 56 senators, so they should be able to find 51 votes to abolish the filibuster when the new session of Congress begins on January 3.

Abolish the Senate filibuster now.
It’s the single most important thing Democrats can do right now. And this is the ideal moment to do it. 🧵
H.E. Ahmed Kouchouk, Minister of Finance, Arab Republic of Egypt (@MofEgypt) officially opened the ATAF Annual Meetings in Cairo highlighting that success is not only measured in revenue collected but in that the tax system has to be comprehensive.
He stressed the significance of policies being used as effective tools in achieving development. "It's important to generate revenue but it's not enough because policy has to be created to achieve growth and push fiscal growth," The Ministr noted.
H.E. Kouchouk reminded governments of their "huge responsibility to protect the rights of tax payers", adding that gaining the trust of tax payers is something that cannot be taken for granted.
The 2026 ATAF Annual Meetings in Cairo, hosted by the Egyptian Tax Authority, has brought together more than 450 participants from across Africa and beyond, including ministers, heads of tax administrations, policymakers, academics and civil society representatives.

H.E. Ramy Youssef Delivers Keynote on UN Tax Convention Negotiations at #ATAFAnnualMeetings2026
1928: An engineer travels to another country to deliver a service, establishing a physical presence that gives the country a basis to tax the income.
2026: The same service can be delivered digitally from abroad, without any physical presence.
2040: Artificial intelligence could deliver similar services in minutes, further transforming how economic value is created.
H.E. Ramy Youssef, Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Finance for Tax Policy and Reforms, used this comparison during his keynote in Cairo to illustrate why international tax rules must evolve with the global economy.
Digitally deliverable services exports reached USD 5.5 trillion globally in 2025, yet research cited during his address indicates that 78.5% of cross-border services imports covered by the analysis face treaty restrictions on taxation in the country where they are consumed.
The stakes are significant. Research suggests that proposed UN rules for taxing cross-border services could generate USD 193 billion in additional annual government revenue globally under an illustrative scenario involving universal implementation.
“The forum is only the means. What is at stake is the tax base of the future.”

Major changes rarely move in a straight line: in 1895 the US Supreme Court struck down the federal income tax; 18 years later it was written into the Constitution”

Vediamo perche?🧵

Yesterday’s elections — and Lula’s victory 10 days ago — are a source of hope for democratic forces, but should also be a wake-up call.
The battle between democracy and oligarchy is just beginning.

With their Senate wins in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, Maine, etc. the Democrats are nearly guaranteed to have a sizable Senate majority in 2028.
This means the next president could be transformational for the US.
That transformation should start now.

Senator @BernieSanders and Rep. @RoKhanna have already introduced legislation to tax billionaire wealth.
The Democrats should pass it now.
There is no excuse not to do it — even Newsom said he supported a national wealth tax.
Trump could veto it, but even so it could pave the way for a 2028 billionaire tax if the Democrats win back the White House. teapawt.org/gabriel_zucman/status/…

In 2021, Biden tried to pass his “billionaire income tax” but the Democrats had only 50 Senators and it failed.
Now with 54 or 55 seats in the Senate, the odds for such legislation are significantly higher.

Under Trump and in the previous Congress, billionaires faced a friendly political environment.
Now the situation has changed dramatically.
It’s now one of the best environments to pass a billionaire tax in Washington in decades.

To be sure, the situation is in some sense more complicated today than in 1900.
Oligarchic forces are vastly richer and more powerful nowadays than during the Gilded Age.
With unlimited political spending and control of social media algorithms, they can exert unprecedented influence on democratic processes.
