David Friedberg reveals France's public spending is 57% of GDP: greater than that of communist countries "This chart is a measure of public spending as a percent of GDP; Rand Group Research published it. And you can see the comparison of France's public spending as a percent of GDP, to the peak public spending as a percent of GDP of major communist nations, Soviet Union during, communist Romania, Venezuela under Chavez, and then communist China." "It certainly been a socialist state, right? That's my point. I think this is such a precious lesson for the West to look at. We all think that there's some political problem with Macron or whoever it was." "The more the government spends, the worse the conditions get for its people, not the opposite. And then the people riot and revolt and say that the government's not spending enough and the government needs to be doing more." "Take a guess where the US is today. Federal government spending is $7.4 trillion, state and local government spending is $4.6 trillion. You add those two together, it's $12 trillion out of a $33 trillion GDP. US public spending is roughly 36% of GDP. France today is the same as the US, it's about 120% debt to GDP." "France today is operating its national government spending deficit is 5.4% of GDP. The US is actually 6.2% of GDP. France is I think probably the first to go because they're only growing their economy at half a percent while the US is growing 2.3%." "So we're still kind of hanging on because we have some degree of economic growth that's allowing us to kind of hold things together." "But I would argue that we are facing the same sort of fiscal cliff that leads to this extraordinary social unrest as France, all the economic measures are aligned, we're at the same rate, we're at the same set of problems."

30 days of Hard Tech: Day 7 🚀 Mach Industries with Jeff Morris Jr. (VC at Chapter One) Mach announced their Series C at a $3.7b valuation as they expand well beyond their original vertical takeoff strike drone, Viper "Ethan (founder of Mach) is a savant. He's 22 years old but when you're talking to him you feel like you're talking to someone who's been in the industry for 30 years." "You meet these special founders every so often in your career and you figure out a way to get in business with them" "It's not a secret that they have ambitions beyond pure defense... if you look at Mach as a hardware and manufacturing company, that opens up a lot of adjacent possibilities"

Dario has written that we need to “pace the frontier,” and Sam has agreed. People may be surprised by my response: go ahead. You guys are the frontier. By any reasonable metric — market share, revenue growth, model capability — the two of you have a duopoly on frontier intelligence. You’ve also claimed the lead is widening because of recursive self-improvement. I don’t see what you see in the lab. If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible. But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Stop pretending antitrust law has to be suspended so you can form a cartel. Stop pretending you need a regulatory approval process that supersedes product liability. Stop pretending METR is independent when it is intertwined with Anthropic’s investors and staff. Stop pretending you need those same evaluators to police competitors who aren’t even at the frontier. Most of all, stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic. You face massive product-liability exposure if your products enable a truly damaging cyberattack. The market already punishes models that behave in unpredictable or unauthorized ways. After the Hugging Face episode, it is simply good business for OpenAI and Anthropic to trade some raw power for reliability and predictability. Call it alignment if you want. It is also just giving customers what they want. Pacing the frontier would also create breathing room for a more intelligent conversation about regulation than Bernie Sanders’ “shut it all down.” China is very unlikely to join a global agreement, as you know, and that has to be taken into account as well. So go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it. The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So just do it. If you do, you’ll buy goodwill for the next conversation. If you don’t, we’ll know this was just another bid for regulatory capture — or an election-season psyop.

You need to be an entrepreneur now, even if you never start a company. I mean that literally. The job title doesn't matter. What matters is whether you own anything. Because we're in the knowledge economy, and knowledge keeps changing as we learn. You can be good at your job today and behind on it before anyone bothers telling you. Same way being illiterate barely cost you anything back when nobody could read. Then everybody could, and if you couldn't, you were out. So you stay flexible. You keep seeking the truth. And you build up your own equity and your own brand while you're working inside somebody else's building. If you don't own that, you get owned. You should be thinking things like: “How could I improve. How could I learn more. How could I give more of myself to the people around me. How could I serve customers better, including the ones already inside my own company. How could I move this whole thing further along.” Yeah it's stressful. This is the good kind of stress though.

Chamath: “If you see the 30 year at 6%, it is the beginning of a death spiral.” @chamath: “We are supposed to be in the middle of an enormous financial build-out to support AI. And if you go all the way back, like 100 years, the Industrial Revolution, the Grand Bargain, all of this stuff, the United States government was the balance sheet. They are the ones that were able to step in. And unfortunately, because of its financial situation, the US government is not able to do that. That's why, thank God, we have companies like Nvidia, and Google, and Microsoft, and Meta, and Amazon who take on that burden. There's so much chirping, by the way, on the internet about the balance sheet of Nvidia and blah, blah, blah, and I think people completely miss that these guys are putting the entire US economy on their back.”

David Sacks Calls Out Dario’s Contradictions on AI & Data Centers @DavidSacks: “Dario actually made this argument in the context of trying to ban export of chips, and the argument was that we want to have a data center full of geniuses in the US, and that eventually what AI's going to be used for is you're going to be able to create all these agents that are basically Nobel Prize-winning level scientists. And if we have thousands or millions of those, and China has only dozens or 100, whatever, then we're going to win everything. And that was the whole argument. But now we're basically banning the data centers. We're not going to have those data centers full of geniuses, and he's done his best to restrict the sale of chips to our allies as well. So I guess our allies aren't going to have the data centers either. So we are totally shooting ourselves in the foot, and probably it would be a good thing if Dario really does believe in the data centers full of geniuses idea that he was arguing for last year, he should come forward and say, ‘We're making a big mistake by over-regulating data centers, here's how we should do it.’ I haven't heard him step up in that way, and it makes you kind of question, do you only fight for the doomer side of the argument, or are there versions of the positive side that you're willing to fight for politically?”

Industry infighting, poor spokesmen and boogeymen have created a real problem for American AI exceptionalism.
What are the most cited reasons people have for opposing data centers in their area? The top three are water use, energy use, and utility bills. This suggests that the propaganda effort to worry people over nothingburgers has been successful!
