Nas ain’t a stretch. He’s the reason the bar exists.
Illmatic rewired the debut. Then he spent 30 years refusing to become a museum. “N.Y. State of Mind.” “Ether.” “One Mic.” “Made You Look.” That’s not a playlist — that’s scripture the culture still quotes.
Ye moved the plates. Nas drew the original map.
Jay built the house. Kendrick filled the stadiums. Drake filled arenas. Kendrick brought the modern crown. Drake 200 writing credits on iceman. Nas is the fourth name the list was scared to write.

I'm not sure how the fans are classifying Drake, but even he said he's a singer in Back to Back, I'm contemplating that being the reason Dot chose that track for his lyrics in Euthoria. A double entendre coz he did go back to back, twice. 😂
Watson is starting in the final year of a fully guaranteed $230M deal with massive dead money still attached. Monken can say he “gives the best chance to move the ball” and that he saw more at the top end, but the organization has every financial reason to keep giving him the snaps while the guarantees are still on the books.
Shedeur didn’t “lose” in a vacuum. The coaching staff has repeatedly praised both as starting-level options, Monken has kept Shedeur as the clear QB2 even after Gabriel returned, and external markets (Polymarket trade interest) still price him with real value. The “he’s just on the bench because he lost” framing ignores the contract reality and the fact that no other 5-2 team is this invested in protecting a high-guaranteed veteran at the expense of the younger option behind him.

Don't know why yall post this, it didn't work for him, he's on the bench, he lost the competition
🚨 Hip-Hop does not rate pop music deals. It rates independence and freedom of artistic expression.
🔺 On the pyramid of deals, independence sits at the top. The next best position outside full independence is the PG Lang agreement — ownership structure, creative control, and cultural alignment in one. Drake filed a lawsuit specifically to uncover the details of that deal. He was disappointed. The arrangement did not match the commercial model he operates under.
🎭 He has since shifted to pop-culture positioning narratives that treat the field as if Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny no longer exist. That framing does not change the math. In-perpetuity label ownership does not become a better deal after 40. It becomes a longer obligation.
📉 Drake tested performance without full label support on a handshake basis and the results were limited. That is why Iceman carried a nearly two-year rollout, jet-lag music from extensive touring, and heightened promotion. The campaign relied on scale, alleged streaming tactics, and coordinated narratives rather than independent demand. Universal still controlled the radio and playlisting infrastructure because the masters remain under their ownership.
📜 Glasses Malone, the leading voice currently legislating hip-hop standards, has drawn the same line: rap records and commercial volume do not automatically place an artist inside the culture. Hip-hop is a practice with rules, history, and a preference for control over the work. Pop deals optimize for reach and perception. They do not rewrite the ranking system.
✅ The standard remains the standard. Independence and artistic freedom still sit above label perpetuity.

🚨 Independent analysis on the Drake filing:
UMG owns the masters. That’s business structure, not hip-hop induction. Pop-performing commercial rap under major-label control does not automatically enter the culture’s rankings system.
The standard remains the standard.

🚨 Independent reporting: Sources note divided opinions on whether Drake’s playlisting and alleged inflation tactics actually moved the needle long-term. A handshake challenge was reportedly floated to test performance without full label support; Drake instead leveraged the Sony partnership on the PartyNextDoor album and narrowly avoided embarrassment. Universal still handled radio and playlisting under existing obligations — the challenge never became a real split.
On Iceman, promotions increased further. The result is ongoing dependence on the label that owns the masters in perpetuity. Same sources say Drake has sought a new deal structured around the exact valuation gap needed to reach billionaire status. The priority remains perception and positioning, not artistic category.
Drake’s arrangement is a commercial pop deal. It is not the strongest version of that model. Kendrick’s current deal remains the highest-valued hip-hop-specific agreement on record to date.

I agree totally...
Everything AK does is a PR move.
And "they" fall for it EVERY TIME! 🙄

Its not in UMGs interest to disclose information about contracts, its a client confidentiality thing. Y.I.G handle that, its only possible way paperwork can be leaked and that's highly unlikely. Hearing it started with Akademiks is no surprise.

Calling Drake hip-hop insults the culture. “Not hip-hop” isn’t a diss. Classic rap records, just as much R&B — the only pop star we still won’t file as pop. When Swift/Wallen/BTS metrics slip, he stays in hip-hop talk for free press. Hits ≠ the culture.

Great article. (Everyone should read it).
I have a few differences tho.
1st...Drake isnt hip hop, never was. He is a pop rapper who worked alongside of hip hop artists. He used their cache to make US think that he was.
Hip hop doesnt jump all genres, do pop songs primarily, have ghostwriters and a team of writers. Pop artists do all of this.
Drake has never said he was hip hop. He has said he was a pop artists on multiple of occasions. (Hence chasing Michael Jackson as opposed to Rakim).
Hip hop culture accepted him... not as a member but as an ally, as a guest. That has now changed.
i would also point out that not only did drake say he studied battle rap for a living, but he has also PARTICIPATED in rap battles where HE THREW JABS AND INSULTS at other artists also. Now he goes to court for the same thing he was doing and has done.
Lastly, you can also say that he sued UMG for defamation of NLU...but one of his demands was to see Kendrick Lamar's contract. What does that have to do with defamation? He also wanted to know if Kendrick has had a violent history..... what the relationship was between Dave Free and Kendrick's son... again...what does that have to do with UMG and defamation.
So yes he technically sued UMG, but it was very much about Kendrick Lamar also.
But again, great article. 🔥🔥

A little off topic, but. The kids keep saying rap is a young person's game, so I'm wondering how a middle aged rapper is gonna get over double he was alleged given last time around.
