Capital taxes on discretionary transactions lead to stagnation and illiquidity.

The pressure to raise capital gains tax from politicians who have never taken a big risk is alarming.
British capitalism is already enfeebled. Yet another attack on the return from risk would push it into decline.
Growth is the child of capital…

So let’s get this right Hegseth. You and your boss start a war against Iran without even informing never mind consulting your European allies, during which Iran seizes the Strait of Hormuz — which you’re now struggling to wrest back. And now you say it’s Europe’s fight rather than America’s.
No. You broke it. You fix it.

Lauren Edwards MP responds to the defeat of the assisted dying bill:
“This is a hugely disappointing result – not for me but for the many thousands of terminally ill people and their loved ones who were given hope when the Commons voted for this Bill last year. It is all the more heartbreaking for them because support for choice at the end of life is still as strong in Parliament as it was before.
The objections raised today were not about the principle of assisted dying but about parliamentary process. The public, who strongly support a change in the law, will not understand why that couldn’t happen because a minority in the House of Lords used procedural devices to block it and MPs baulked at insisting that they do their job.
Assisted Dying will come in this country, as it is already doing all across the world, but not soon enough. Parliament has dropped the ball today. It will be picked up again as it must be, because the law as it stands is simply too cruel and too unjust to be allowed to stand.”

Over 60 MPs from across Parliament have signed my letter calling for an 18-week dementia diagnosis target.
The Prime Minister must turn his words on social care into action. A concrete commitment on dementia is the first test.

"Even the finest medicine cannot relieve every form of suffering...Recognising those limits is not a criticism of palliative care. It is an acknowledgement of reality. That is precisely why improving palliative care and legalising assisted dying are complementary, not contradictory."
@MichaelPayneUK sets the record straight - we must strive to provide both world-class care and choice for terminally ill, mentally competent adults.

Lauren Edwards MP on the PM's remarks yesterday: "we can tackle all the changes that are needed...this can happen alongside providing the choice of an assisted death to that small minority for whom even the very best palliative care cannot relieve their suffering."

Lauren Edwards, who’s bringing back the assisted dying bill, has responded to Andy Burnham’s comments.
She argues improving social and palliative care can go hand in hand with assisted dying as per some other nations.
She also notes a 4 year implementation period for the bill.

Simply don’t understand those willing to deny the evidence of multiple doctors from a variety of different countries; independent investigators all with long and established careers, journalists, survivors and witnesses, a pile of visual evidence as well as their own eyes - and still attempt to discredit those who report this. - whether they’re survivors, medics, academics or journalists…
The Lords were prevented from doing their job last time. Bravo to Lauren Edwards for bringing the Bill back so we can ask peers to complete their work.

This is illuminating.
“..oversaw..” that is an interesting choice of word.
Because as Suella knows I did not draft that bill. I did not see it prior to its introduction. I was, as she knows, only asked to take it through the Commons hours before it was heard. Nor was I given any authority to alter it- but I did make asks to do so to the Cabinet Office- to change the gender-neutral language wording to female wording.
All this is a matter of record. As are the names of those that drafted it. As are the members of the PLB Committee which would have cleared it, a Committee which included Suella as the Attorney General. Given that the Bill was about her maternity leave I assumed she would have taken an interest.
Perhaps I was wrong to make such assumptions. And to take her thanks and delight at it being introduced that she expressed to me at the time- in writing- as her genuine feelings.
As I say, illuminating.
This is the woman who, as a Tory Minister, declared that ‘Trans women are Women’.
She also oversaw a law (for my maternity leave) that described me as a ‘pregnant person’ so as not to offend trans people. Even after backlash, she would not include the word ‘woman’. We had to settle on ‘mother’.
And she plans to come back and lead the Party.
The Conservative Party should be apologising to the country for its Great Betrayal on DEI.
Never trust them.
