What countries are overrepresented in dev research? Using new database of published dev papers, a scatterplot of papers published vs. log extremely poor population (<PPP $2.15 in 2021); left-truncated for < 100K ppl. Curve captures proportional representation (given log scale)
One of the most annoying parts of AI use has to be how the agent is constantly reminding me that I'm not doing the thing that I said I would always do (and put into a skill)
ok get out of my face Claude, I know I'm not living up to my best self
Today's cool young researcher #econtwitter #econsky is @fulviabudillon at Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics who works on topics related to health + development
Another paper joint w/Ramachandran finds that opening a medical college in a particular district in India thihealth facilities + health workers, almost entirely in urban private sector; this ⬆️ health care uptake by pregnant women but no effect on health outcomes

Now beyond your goal of publishing in QJE you can have a new goal: publishing sufficient QJE papers that someone uses a bogus AI prompt to ostensibly critique them
Today's cool young researcher #econtwitter #econsky is @jaug1022 @WFUEconomics who works on topics relate to urban economics, crime + development
And another paper finds that opening public transportation in Medellin joint w/@GCanavire Duque substantially reduces homicide, a phenomenon driven by an improving formal labor market

I am fairly indifferent to (many) debates around AI-generated writing - in econ. A 🧵
Before you ask, no, I don't hate literature; reading is actually my main (only?) hobby.
There are obviously some exceptions: content that purports to be personal should be (don't have AI write funny family anecdotes; you can just not write them if you don't want to). Referee reports should not be AI-written even if they are AI-polished. Pangram has its place
This is an insane graph. . .would not have guessed there was such a sharp gradient at the top
I guess I'm in rarefied company over here
Today's cool young researcher #econtwitter #econsky is @caterina_vieira @LSEEcon who works on topics related to development + urban economics
And evidence from Copenhagen joint w/ @Ahlfeldt @IsmirMulalic Sturm that the most important factor driving spatial sorting is heterogeneity in preferences for local amenities
