Durga Pujo in Kolkata was ALWAYS a grand event. And it was grand because the people made it so. They went all out to welcome their daughter home. No amount of spending tax payers money on events will make it grander than it already is. Pujo belongs to people, not governments.
So funny to see people going all "bengal is healing", "first in my bloodline to see this", blah blah blah, when Durga Puja got the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage for it's grandeur and community spirit long before any of these people even knew it was a thing, back in 2021.🤣

If madam had ever witnessed Durga Pujo in Calcutta before, she would have known that we don't celebrate the festival like Diwali with fireworks. Problem of growing up on an Ekta Kapur set. No class, all crass.
📍 Eden Gardens, Kolkata Maa being welcomed with the grandeur She always deserved. Change has arrived, and the soul of this land breathes free once again – unapologetic, magnificent, and forever at the holy feet of Ma Durga. শুভ মহালয়া! 🙏

#Opinion | Aakar Patel writes: I appeared before him with the raggedy file of papers I have to prove that I exist and that I am qualified to elect those we euphemistically call public servants. The birth certificate and the school leaving certificate were washed away in the Surat flood of 2006. It occurs to me that the state insists I am Indian when taxing me and filing cases against me, but suspects I am not when it comes to voting. deccanchronicle.com/opinion/…

For the first time in the 72-year history of the National Film Awards, the ceremony is being shifted from the national capital, Delhi, to Kevadia in Gujarat. While there is an ongoing concerted effort to diminish the importance of Mumbai, the country's financial capital, a similar attempt has now begun to gradually erode the significance of the national capital itself. What is the actual reason for moving this award ceremony? It appears that, unable to create anything substantial themselves, the current strategy involves changing names and venues to fabricate a misleading history. Perhaps sensing an eventuality where their influence might be confined solely to Gujarat, the two leaders currently in power at the Centre seem determined to establish some sense of grandeur and importance there. If the venue had to be changed, why wasn't it moved to Mumbai? Why isn't the award distribution taking place in the state where Dadasaheb Phalke laid the foundation of Indian cinema? Why not in Maharashtra, or in southern states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, or Telangana where most films get produced? Cinema has played a pivotal role in shaping the politics of the southern states. Why Gujarat specifically? Past Prime Ministers never attempted to artificially boost the prominence of the states that were their birthplaces or spheres of work. We see the Commonwealth Games held in Gujarat, the 2023 Cricket World Cup final hosted in Gujarat, visiting heads of state taken to Gujarat, and the GIFT City project shifted from Mumbai to Gujarat. What exactly do Narendra Modi and Amit Shah intend to convey through all this? Are they suggesting that the very cradle of this nation was rocked in Gujarat? The nation that stands today is the result of sacrifices made by countless generations and contributions from every single region of the country. They seem to remember the rest of the country beyond Gujarat only at the time of local elections. Only then would they go there, don local attire, deliver speeches, and garner votes by claiming an old connection to those states. Those currently in power are not known to have a genuine appreciation for the arts. Their only ‘artistic’ inclination lies in the singular skill of winning elections by any means necessary and coercing everyone else to fall in line. As for cinema, their only connection involves commissioning propaganda films and ensuring they receive awards. While other cinema-loving states in the South would vehemently oppose this, nothing will happen in Maharashtra. But artists must raise their voices against this. The issue isn't whether it is held in Kevadia or elsewhere; artists need to question why the illustrious tradition of these awards, established in the nation's capital, is being dismantled. Otherwise, a day might come when they issue a diktat stating that National Awards will not be given unless the event takes place in Gujarat. The Oscars are always held in Los Angeles. Neither Trump, Bush, nor Obama ever tried to move the awards to their home states. I urge my Gujarati brothers not to get carried away by these people. The current sense of gratification derived from having leaders who speak your language will turn into a painful ordeal once that power slips away. Citizens and leaders from other Indian regions will eventually take stock of the injustices inflicted upon their states and local businesses. We will certainly speak out on this issue, but artists across the country must also take a stand. We have reached this pass precisely because people readily sing the government's praises whenever asked. Therefore, everyone must oppose this trend. If Maharashtra and the Southern states fail to take a firm stand, these people will crush the very identity and ethos of the Deccan region, and then, it will be too late. You all are uploading your photos to ChatGPT for a silly trend? Are you all not aware how desperate these AI companies are for this data? Are you not aware that OpenAI and other such AI companies are selling their services to defence departments of countries who are waging wars? Are you not aware that your data will be used to train their models for facial recognition? Are you not aware that various governments, including the union and state governments in India, and its police departments are weaponising facial recognition to surveil citizens?

Murder, not ‘demise’.
The tragic demise of musician Chongtham Vikram Singh from Manipur is deeply distressing. The safety and dignity of every person from the Northeast is non-negotiable. I urge the Delhi Police to ensure swift action and a thorough investigation, and that those responsible face the strictest consequences under the law. My deepest condolences to Vikram’s family, friends and loved ones. @YKhemchandSingh @LokBhavManipur

Chongtham Vikram Singh ji, a renowned musician from Manipur, went downstairs to ask some men to lower the noise outside his home. He was beaten to death for it. A father, killed outside his own home, in his own country's capital. After many such incidents, every Northeast family in Delhi is asking the same question today - are we safe here? What are Shah's MHA and Delhi Police doing to stop this growing lawlessness, especially against people from the Northeast? There must be a swift investigation, and the culprits must be brought to justice. My condolences to Vikram ji's family.

I retweeted this earlier today and received some hostile comments, so I thought I'd share a story. The photo on the left shows Constable Sukhvinder Singh Sunger, a Canadian Sikh police officer who recently led the Vancouver Police Pipe Band at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The event is held at Edinburgh Castle, and it celebrates military bands from around the world. Thus, for the event, Constable Sunger wore traditional Highland dress with a ceremonial dastār (Sikh turban). I think he looks resplendent for all the reasons I've mentioned in my previous threads: the use of "shape and drape," texture, and the semiotics of clothing. But some were less enthused about a Canadian man of South Asian descent wearing Scottish clothing. So I thought I'd share a story about Alexander Haughton Campbell Gardner, an adventurer and mercenary born in 1785 in what would become modern Wisconsin. By his own account, his father was Scottish, and his mother was Anglo-Spanish, although at least one of his contemporaries thought he was Irish. Either way, he would be considered "white" today. At the age of 24, he traveled to Europe and, shortly after, began exploring Russia and Central Asia. It was in Central Asia, he claims, that he started to adopt the local customs and mores, often presenting himself as Muslim. Although one wonders how easily he was able to blend in, as he stood six feet tall and had a penchant for drinking. According to him, he was captured in Afghanistan in 1824, but ended up joining a rebel force, commanding 180 horsemen, and marrying a local woman, with whom he fathered a child near Parwan. His wife and child were later killed after his patron's defeat, which drove him to Punjab. It was in Punjab, he claims, where he joined the Sikh Army, eventually rising to the level of Colonel. He claims to have been present at Lahore, then the capital of the Sikh Empire, and says he killed 300 men during a fierce clash. Much of Gardner's life is hard to verify, as many of his fantastical claims come from his much-contested memoir, which has little to no third-party corroboration. However, one thing is certain, if only because we have photographic evidence. Later in life, he had a striking style of self-presentation. In the photo on the right, you can see him in a tartan suit and Sikh turban. His facial hair is long because many Sikhs believe not cutting your hair shows respect for God's perfect creation. Gardner was a man of American descent, European lineage, and Central/ South Asian cultural identity. He died with the name Gordana Khan. This complex form of diasporic identity goes back to 1785, shortly after the United States declared independence from Britain. In my opinion, it goes to show that culture is porous and identities can be complex, not as clear and "pure" as many would like to pretend.

No, this is not a protein powder. Here is a quick heuristic for considering anything to be an excellent protein source - at least 20g of protein per 100 kcal. 15-20g is very good. 10-15 is good. Below 10, it's really not a protein source If you do the math on this powder, it comes to 4.2g of protein per 100 kcal. It is mostly a carb and fat source. In contrast, whey isolate gets you 22-24g per 100 kcal.
Simple combo of ingredients can become our super energy drink - if you do or don't do gym.. basically everyone should prepare, store and consume this Protein Powder. I don’t know from where she gets her information. Bengalis hail from two traditions-Vaishnav and Shakt. As my family was the former in our family Durga Puja strict vegetarian diet was maintained through all four days. In certain shakt houses, on nabami day, the balir phata or sacrificial goat was served as bhog. Of course the economics of it did not work well for baroari or community pujas which dished out khichuri and labra on all days. However in bonedi houses or private family pujas fish and /or mutton is still served as bhog on nabami. No onion, garlic or chicken though. 😇🤓
I don't know where this misinformation about non-veg in Durga Puja bhog is coming from. The bhog offered to Ma Durga is completely vegetarian, without onion or garlic. Bengalis do eat non-veg during Puja, and that's their choice. But bhog is strictly vegetarian.
