Jamaica’s ability to monitor and track weather systems has been strengthened with the commissioning of our Doppler radar system, which replaced a nearly 20-year-old system. Installed in 2021, the radar provides critical data that allows meteorologists to monitor weather conditions at a distance, track developing systems and improve the information available for forecasting. Its value was evident during Hurricane Melissa, when the radar provided important data before and throughout the hurricane’s passage, supporting our understanding of the system as it affected Jamaica. Investing in modern weather-monitoring technology is an important part of strengthening our national preparedness and giving Jamaicans better information to make decisions that protect lives and property. We will continue to strengthen our capacity to anticipate, prepare for and respond to severe weather events.

Looking at pictures from the period immediately after Hurricane Melissa, and felt both a sadness and hopefulness simultaneously. Can’t quite explain it. This video we took, speaking to a resident in Windsor St Ann is how I hope we can think of it…

Last week I had the opportunity to sit with the President and Executive members of the The PSOJ to discuss current issues facing the water sector, with a focus on the operations of the National Water Commission The discussion was useful to ensure that the issues affecting the sector were fully ventilated. We will continue to consult with stakeholders as we transform the water sector.

This morning I engaged members of the executive of the Small Business Association to have open and frank discussions about the country’s water sector and our approach to financing it. I was happy for the opportunity to meet with them and share the facts related to National Water Commission and it request for a tariff increase. I also thank them for there suggestions.

Commissioner of Police, Dr. Kevin Blake, has condemned the deadly attack on members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) during an operation in Sligoville, St. Catherine. One police officer has been killed, while another remains in critical condition. The Commissioner has expressed condolences to the family of the fallen officer and support for the family of the injured member. The attack highlights the dangers police officers face daily as they work to protect Jamaicans and confront violent crime. Dr. Blake has reaffirmed the JCF’s determination to pursue those responsible, dismantle criminal networks and ensure that offenders are brought to justice. The nation extends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen officer and wishes the injured officer a full recovery.

Bring your questions, concerns and recommendations to the virtual town hall on the National Cays Management Policy. 🗓️ Tuesday, October 13, 2026 ⏰ 6:00 p.m. 📺 Watch live on JISTV on YouTube and Facebook @MWECCJA. The National Cays Management Policy for Jamaica proposes four categories to guide the management of the country’s cays, rocks, islands and associated ecosystems. Help us protect Jamaica’s cays. #mweccja #ProtectJamaicasCays @nepajamaica

I welcomed representatives of the Jamaican Bar Association and the Advocates Association for an important discussion on the Firearms Act and the fight against violent crime. I acknowledge the concerns raised by the legal fraternity, particularly around exceptional circumstances and the need to preserve fairness in the application of the law. These views will form part of the review of the legislation. At the same time, we must continue to remove illegal guns from our communities and protect Jamaicans from gun violence. Guns have caused deep pain in too many families, and I have seen this pain personally in my own constituency. We believe in justice, forgiveness and second chances. Our responsibility is to ensure that the law protects innocent people, holds those who use illegal firearms to account and helps to keep Jamaica safe. The conversation will continue through the established review process, with the aim of refining the legislation while protecting the lives and rights of Jamaicans.
