Another day, another #merrillmade intern spotlight! Say hi to Katherine Schutzman (@kschutzmanmedia)! Katherine was an editorial intern with The Frederick News-Post (@frednewspost) through Merrill College's @LNNMaryland. She got the full employment experience, working 40 hours a week in person at the Frederick office for eight weeks! She worked on business features, primary election night coverage and stories about a local controversy surrounding AI and data centers. “Working at The Frederick News-Post has given me a new appreciation for local news," Katherine said. "I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the area and community members, and it’s been so much fun to see my name in print! I know the collaboration and communication skills I’ve built during this internship will be a benefit to me in any future career.” #fearlessjournalism

EXCITING NEWS: The Philip Merrill College of Journalism and NPR have entered into a multiyear partnership to host NPR’s public editor at Merrill College beginning in January 2027! The incoming public editor will serve as a Merrill College visiting professor specializing in trust, transparency and media ethics. The public editor fulfills an important role as the public’s representative to NPR in matters of journalism and journalism ethics. The public editor immerses themselves in NPR’s content to represent NPR’s audience by raising questions about NPR’s work, highlighting where NPR succeeds and falls short in its mission, and examining the editorial dilemmas faced by, and decisions made by, NPR’s journalists. The public editor addresses these issues through columns, newsletters and on-air appearances. “We are thrilled to embark on this new partnership with NPR, one that will benefit our students, the entire Merrill College community and journalism as a whole,” Merrill College Dean Rafael Lorente said. “It is imperative that we as journalists connect with the public in order to rebuild trust and make sure that journalism successfully serves its important role in a free and democratic society. Bringing the public editor to the University of Maryland allows us to foster open conversation with news consumers.” The college will post the position with applications open soon. Merrill College will also hire staff to support the work of the public editor. MORE: go.umd.edu/NPRPublicEditor

This week's #merrillmade intern is Benjamin Messinger, who interned for @dcwitness over the summer! As a reporting intern, Benjamin would attend one to four D.C. Superior Court hearings a day, where he would take and digitize notes, input data from the hearings and write articles about them. "At first, I was unsure about this internship because it was unlike anything I had covered in the past. I covered mostly sports and a little bit of politics," he said. "But I learned about the legal system in a way that I never thought of before and got a unique view on the jobs of judges and lawyers and really delved into the stories of defendants in major criminal cases in D.C." #fearlessjournalism

SO HAPPY for the #merrillmade students, faculty and staff from our Howard Center for Investigative Journalism who were honored at last week's Edward R. Murrow Awards celebration! Our Howard Center won its second Murrow Award, and first for investigative journalism, for “Off the Rails,” which explored safety regulatory gaps in the North American rail industry. It was a special night to recognize this innovative collaboration — which included NPR, CBC, our Capital News Service, ASU's Howard Center, the University of British Columbia’s Global Reporting Centre, Evident Media and The Narwhal. Congratulations to all!

THANK YOU to Mike and Karen Weissel, parents of #merrillmade alum Brendan ’26 and fellow Terp Brad ’20, for launching an endowment of #UMD's Testudo Mascot Program! Brendan and Brad are both proud former Testudos. Funds earned from the endowment can pay for additional Testudo suits and mascot training camps, among other program needs. The new gift follows the Weissels' earlier donation to design and buy new heads for Testudo. Incredible generosity to support the symbol of the University of Maryland! #fearlessjournalism Read more: today.umd.edu/gift-gives-tes…

'It's been a lot. But I was focused on doing my job and asking my questions that I wanted answers to.' Student journalist Cat Murphy joins @jaketapper to respond after GOP Rep. Andy Harris threatened to have her prosecuted for recording his answers during a news conference.

Merrill College students know their rights as journalists. "Cat Murphy is a master's student at the University of Maryland, credentialed as a reporter for our Capital News Service and doing the job we teach our students to do. Cat recorded openly in a public space alongside other news outlets, and that is her legal right," Dean Rafael Lorente (@DeanLorente) said. "I'm proud of how she handled herself in a difficult situation."
Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.
