Missing People’s Based on a True Story campaign uses the public’s interest in true crime to make an important point: these stories aren’t entertainment. They’re real people, and real families still waiting for answers.
This campaign is about shifting how we talk about missing people and standing with the families behind every disappearance.
At the centre is our new Responsible Narratives charter — a commitment to engaging with these stories responsibly and respectfully.

When the Telegraph Christmas Charity Appeal launched in its current form 40 years ago. Over four decades we’ve supported dozens of charities to raise awareness and crucial funds over the Christmas period.
This year, we have chosen four more charities whose work gains a special relevance at this festive time of year; offering connection, support, and a helping hand to those who need it most: Missing People (@missingpeople), Kidney Research UK, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People (@HearingDogs) and Little Troopers (@LittleTroopers_)
As we come together to celebrate the festive season we must also do our part for the people who sorely need our help to put some joy and cheer back into the world. Every year, you respond to our charity appeal with outstanding generosity. In a message from familiar faces at The Telegraph and beyond, we humbly ask the same of you in 2026.
