Before it can carve a path beneath East Harlem to bring the Q to 125 St, every component of this 1.5-million-pound tunnel boring machine has to prove it’s ready. Crews spent days in the factory testing every single system to make sure the machine will be able to chew through Manhattan bedrock and install the concrete tunnel lining as it goes. The final hurdle: turning the 25-foot-diameter cutterhead you see here. The first machine passed its final factory test. Next stop: New York. Read more in This Week in Construction: mta.info/thisweek
