Today marks 10 years of Muslim Women’s Day 🩷
Launched in response to the Muslim Ban, the global campaign defined a new era in how Muslim women are seen… and how we speak for ourselves.
But progress is not protection.
The record continues.

The way Jennifer Garner is using her platform and personal resources to fight for women and kids in government policy is truly incredible, especially when her own children are already grown.
Jennifer Garner is a mom on a mission to make healthy baby food accessible to every family.
Through her company’s participation in WIC, the federal nutrition assistance program for women and children, the actor is expanding access to organic baby food for lower-income families.

For the first time in my life, I wore a custom dress to TIME100.
The designer literally flew someone in from Senegal to hand-deliver it to me just in time. 🇸🇳

excuse me is that-—
10 years ago today, I became a published author. 🥹
I wanted to tell the story of what it meant to grow up Muslim in America, in our own words, at a time when the world seemed determined to define us for us.
I could never have imagined where that little book would take me, the people it would reach, or the doors it would open. From becoming a New York Times Editors’ Choice to seeing it in the hands of readers (and girl dads!) around the world. The little girl who was bullied for being Muslim never dreamed that one day her story might help others feel less alone or challenge the prejudices she grew up facing.
So much has changed in 10 years. And in a lot of ways, many of the passages I wrote back then could still have been written today. But this book is a little piece of forever for all the little girls that ever cried in the dark.
Here’s to the stories we tell, the space we take up, and the girls who come after us.
Happy 10th birthday, Muslim Girl. 🩷
