This afternoon, I was sworn in to serve as a Washington County Commissioner. I'm so thankful for everyone who came, to the central committee for their selection , for the Governor for his appointment, and the State Senate for their confirmation. I'm thankful to my family for supporting me in this new endeavor and thankful to God for His great loving kindness and mercy. I look forward to serving all of the people in the county while I work to keep Washington County as a great place to live, to raise a family, and to do business in.

Good morning! It’s a great day to vote! If you haven’t voted, think about voting at lunch or right after work. A few people called me to ask who I am voting for in the local elections, so I thought I’d share it here. In Washington County, I am voting for Darrell Evans and Mike Guessford for school board, for all 5 Republicans running for commissioner, and against Question 3. Of course, voting for Dan Cox for Governor and Robin Ficker for Congress.

Check out the Mid-Maryland Votes conversation regarding why Question 3 is so bad for Maryland and why I strongly encourage every Marylander regardless of party to vote against Question 3. facebook.com/share/p/1CUiBX4…

Happy 250th Washington County! It was established in September 6, 1776 and became effective October 1, 1776. Today, we buried a time capsule in Halfway Park that is supposed to be revealed in 50 years, on Washington County and the United States 300th! Don’t know that I’ll be able to see that one, but you never know. :)

Happy 250th Anniversary Washington County, MD! I loved the drone show and fireworks at the Ag Center tonight.  Check out a little bit of the drone show on this video.  Antietam Battlefield, the 1st Washington Monument, the National Highway, Sideling Hill, Fairchild, and much more.

I hated to read that 8 inmates were stabbed in the Roxbury Correctional Facility. I have to wonder though if this is a direct result of the transfer of new inmates to Roxbury from the Jessup Correctional Facility. The Jessup facility closed on June 30th, and they sent that prison population to Western Maryland. The stabbing occurred as part of a gang fight between members of MS-13 and the Black Guerrilla Family, perhaps to establish their ranking as the new prison population comes in. Hopefully this is the end of the fighting inside the facility, and I pray for the safety of the correctional officers and inmates during this time. Perhaps it would have been better to keep the Jessup facility open. corrections1.com/investigati…

Interesting video. The Senate Parliamentarian is one reason the SAVE Act has been stalled in the US Senate.
Who is the Senate Parliamentarian and why is Trump calling for her to be removed!? I break it down.

*CLARIFICATION* I have received several calls about a tax increase that takes place on 7/1/2026. There was incorrect information to say that a tax increase was voted on today - in fact, there was no Washington County Government - Maryland meeting today. The tax increase was voted on in August, 2025 by 5-0 vote, I was not a commissioner yet. BUT - I have been assured that even that vote was not a tax increase, but was a financial neutral option. In exchange for the excise tax increasing from $1-$1.75, the APFO fee was eliminated. With regard to taxes, I did put forward a proposed reduction for the property tax rate in June because the assessments of our homes have gone up by over 20% percent in the last 3 years (1) resulting in real estate tax rates going up by over 20%. In introduced this as an amendment to the general fund budget, but unfortunately, no other commissioner seconded the motion, so it did not pass. (1) washco-md.net/news/property-…

I like Milton Friedman's 3 primary functions for gov't. What do you think? “Government has three primary functions. It should provide for military defense of the nation. It should enforce contracts between individuals. It should protect citizens from crimes against themselves or their property. When government-- in pursuit of good intentions tries to rearrange the economy, legislate morality, or help special interests, the cost come in inefficiency, lack of motivation, and loss of freedom. Government should be a referee, not an active player.” ― Milton Friedman

Happy 100th birthday, Congressman Roscoe Bartlett! April and I were honored to campaign for the Congressman many years ago, and we honored to be able to celebrate with so many of the Bartletts’ longtime friends and family. We look forward to the Congressman’s 105th birthday party!

Happy 100th Birthday to Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, the last congressman Maryland District #6 had who actually lived in the district he represented.
Today, I was honored to recognize former Maryland Congressman Roscoe Bartlett on the House floor as he celebrates his 100th birthday. An accomplished scientist, inventor, farmer, and public servant, Roscoe dedicated 20 years to representing Maryland’s Sixth District and made lasting contributions to our nation. Happy 100th Birthday, Congressman Bartlett.

Thank you to the Sheriff's in Allegany, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Kent, Queen Anne’s, St. Mary’s, Somerset, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico and Worcester Counties. 17 of Maryland's 23 counties oppose the Community Trust Act which “intentionally obstructs federal law enforcement and thwarts Plaintiffs’ obligation to uphold the Constitution of the United States.” marylandmatters.org/2026/05/…

"High taxes reach everywhere and burden everybody. They gear most heavily upon the poor. They diminish industry and commerce. They make agriculture unprofitable. They increase the rates on transportation. They are a charge on every necessary of life." Calvin Coolidge in his first message to Congress in 1923

This weekend, our Hagerstown community came out strong for the Hub City Half Marathon! April and I cheered for our daughter, Charity, and her friend from Liberty University. They both did great. Charity placed 11th out of all the women running. This was her first long race, and she crushed her goal of running 13.1 miles in under 2 hours.
