UPDATE: Both Philadelphia police officers shot early Saturday on the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia are in critical condition, FOX29 reports. Commissioner Kevin Bethel said both are alive but face a long road to recovery. One officer has come out of surgery and the other was still in surgery as of Saturday morning. The 33-year-old officer, a father of five, was shot 12 times. The 40-year-old officer, a father of two, was shot three times. Both work out of the 19th District. The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing a law enforcement source, identified the alleged shooter as Eric Lewis, a Philadelphia Water Department employee. Police have not officially released his name, and charges have not been announced. He was taken into custody after SWAT found him in a tree. Three guns were recovered, including one taken from a wounded officer. Anyone charged is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The second officer, described as a 40-year-old father, was also struck by gunfire. Both officers were rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where they underwent emergency surgery. Their conditions have not yet been officially confirmed. Commissioner Bethel said additional officers responded following the initial shooting and attempted to close in on the suspect. Authorities say the gunman continued firing at responding officers multiple times. The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s apprehension have not yet been confirmed.
