He was born nearby in Greenville, Mississippi on September 24, 1936, before his family moved to Leland. He spent his boyhood exploring the banks of Deer Creek, catching frogs and tadpoles. That is how he got his Inspiration for Kermit the Frog. He later stated that these idyllic Delta years and his childhood friend Kermit Scott inspired the creation of Kermit the Frog.
