This exercise is called a 3-point ISO front squat. The reason that Michael is doing this in this particular block is that we’re in a phase of the off-season where we’re trying to accumulate volume and time under tension.
The 3-point ISO is going to make him command 3 different positions going through a squat pattern. It’s going to increase the time under tension, and we’re going to use the front rack position for Michael specifically, given the goal we had in his delivery: improving his arm action.
With respect to how his scap loads on his rib cage, the front squat is going to allow us to be in a position that promotes a little bit more expansion of the thoracic spine, as opposed to a back squat or even a safety bar squat position. That expansion of the posterior rib cage is going to provide a better foundation for the scap to move on.
We’re also utilizing the ramp in an effort to control his center of gravity and control his pelvis. It’s helping him sit back a little bit more and keep his pelvis from dumping forward and leveraging too much of that to create force.
