As communities celebrate Diwali, we’re sharing the story of Hardit Singh Malik – a pioneering Sikh aviator whose determination helped break barriers in Britain’s flying services. Malik became an officer in the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 after previously being rejected for military service because of his race. He flew Sopwith Camels on the Western Front and became the first member of the Service permitted to wear a turban and full beard. His story is one of courage, identity and service – and an important part of the history we preserve at the Royal Air Force Museum.
