๐ฏ๏ธ Aberfan: A Nation Remembers | Cenedl yn Cofio
Today marks 60 years since the Aberfan disaster of 21 October 1966, when 144 lives were tragically lost, including 116 children.
We remember the children whose futures were taken, the families whose lives changed forever, and the community whose grief continues to echo through generations.
At Race Council Cymru, we stand in solidarity with the people of Aberfan, the survivors, and all those who carry the memory of their loved ones.
Six decades on, their stories remain woven into the history and heart of Wales. Their lives will never be forgotten.
With love, respect and deepest sympathy, we remember. ๐ฏ๏ธ

Weโre proud to support Hugs Not Handouts 2026, a campaign by Faith in Families raising awareness of the realities of poverty and showing children and families across Swansea Bay that they are seen, supported and valued.

A PROUD MOMENT FOR RACE COUNCIL CYMRU. โค๏ธ
We are immensely proud to celebrate our Founder and Chief Executive, Professor Uzo Iwobi CBE, who has been nationally recognised by Black History Month UK as part of Honouring Black Britain 2026.
For more than two decades, Professor Uzo has dedicated her life to social justice, racial equality and civic leadership.
From establishing Walesโs first African Community Centre, to founding Race Council Cymru, influencing equality policy and creating platforms that ensure Black voices, histories and experiences are seen, heard and valued, her impact can be felt across Wales and far beyond.
But perhaps her greatest legacy is found in the people.
The young people she has mentored.
The elders whose stories she has helped preserve.
The communities she has stood beside.
The leaders she has encouraged to step forward.
And the doors she has opened so others can walk through them.
This yearโs Black History Month theme is Honouring Our Communities.
We could not think of a more fitting recognition for a woman whose lifeโs work has been devoted to building, serving and strengthening community.
Professor Uzo, your Race Council Cymru family celebrates you. Your work is part of the history of modern Wales, and that history is still being written.
Congratulations, Professor. โค๏ธ๐๐พ

THIS IS WHAT MAKING HISTORY LOOKS LIKE. โค๏ธ
Today, all of us at Race Council Cymru celebrate a woman whose courage, service and leadership have helped transform the landscape of racial equality in Wales: our Founder and Chief Executive, Professor Uzo Iwobi CBE.
Professor Uzo has been recognised nationally by Black History Month UK through Honouring Black Britain 2026, celebrating people whose leadership and service have made a meaningful contribution to Britain.
And what a journey hers has been.
She came to Wales and did not simply find a place within its institutions.
She helped build new ones.
She created spaces for African and Caribbean communities.
She challenged racial injustice.
She brought community voices into rooms where decisions were being made.
She championed Black Welsh history and helped ensure the experiences of our elders would not disappear from Walesโs national story.
Most importantly, she has spent years reminding generations of Black people across Wales that we belong here, our voices matter, our stories matter and our contribution matters.
Behind this photograph are decades of service, sacrifice, resilience and an unwavering belief in the power of community.
So today, Professor Uzo, we honour you.
We celebrate you.
And we thank you.
From everyone at Race Council Cymru, congratulations on this beautiful and richly deserved national recognition. โค๏ธ๐ค๐
Your work has made history. Your work is making history. And your legacy will help others make history too.

๐ A Journey of Learning, Reflection and Connection: Windrush Cymru Elders in Ghana ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ด
We are delighted to share that Windrush Cymru elders are undertaking a Taith-funded educational trip to Ghana, creating a unique opportunity to explore, learn and reflect on the history of the Transatlantic Enslavement Trade and its profound impact on generations of their ancestors.
This journey is about more than visiting places connected to history. It is an opportunity to listen, learn and engage with the stories, heritage and experiences that have shaped generations of people of African descent. We are working with Professor Olivette Otele - our Wales based historian, meeting historians in Ghana.
During their time in Ghana, the elders will explore significant historical sites and deepen their understanding of the Transatlantic Enslavement Trade, while reflecting on the journeys their ancestors were forced to undertake and the enduring legacy of that history.
The visit will also celebrate Ghanaian culture, traditions, resilience and community, creating space to discover and strengthen the connections between African heritage and the lives and experiences of the Windrush generation and their descendants in Wales.
Most importantly, this journey provides an opportunity to bring Wales and Ghana together โ connecting people, communities, cultures and shared histories across generations. Through meeting communities and sharing experiences, the elders will explore how meaningful and lasting relationships can be built between Wales and Ghana today.
By looking honestly at the past, celebrating culture and heritage, and creating new connections for the future, this journey represents an important step towards greater understanding, friendship and collaboration between Wales and Ghana.
This is a journey of remembrance, education, identity, culture and reconnection โ honouring the past while building bridges between Wales and Ghana for future generations.
