ProTip: If you’re going to automate your response to a job posting… put yourself in the shoes of the person who just spent time writing it and is hoping for thoughtful responses. You were the first applicant. You apparently read the project scope, reviewed the requirements docs, answered all the questions, estimated the project, broke it into phases, even upsold me on some of the nice-to-haves… and somehow found me on LinkedIn and sent a DM, too. All in under four minutes. Riiiiight… At minimum… put a sleep(975) in your robot. 🗑️

We've decided to sunset Arc on December 22, 2026. That's not an easy sentence to write. We spent years building Arc and celebrating each and every release along the way: we have so much pride and love for what we made alongside the Arc community. Our priority is to deliver best-in-class security for our members. Keeping a browser secure takes constant, dedicated work that is only increasing in the age of AI. Dia was built from the ground up to meet today’s security standards, so that's where our engineering and security teams will focus moving forward. We've worked to make switching to @diabrowser as easy as possible for Arc members. Here's how: · Your passwords, bookmarks, extensions and history come over to Dia seamlessly. · Spaces, Folders, and Tab Groups are in Dia and import over with your data intact. · Dia now surpasses Arc benchmarks in stability, speed, and security. · The browser features you use in Arc are free in Dia, and the AI is optional. Thank you for using Arc, for pushing us to make it better, and for building alongside us. The team that made Arc is the same team behind Dia, and some of our most ambitious work is just ahead. We'd love for you to be there with us when it lands.

LinkedIn's search (for past content) is terrible.

The best employees make you feel confident that someone competent could step in tomorrow if they suddenly disappeared. They share knowledge, document what matters, and actively reduce how much the organization depends on them. And ironically… that’s what makes them indispensable. Be wary of anyone who needs to be irreplaceable.

Got to chat with Hussain and AC from @Donorbox about how Rails is part of their secret sauce.
How does @Donorbox handle serious traffic without overcomplicating its stack? On the next episode of On Rails, Hussain Akram & @acdesouza (AC) talk to @robbyrussell about the power of deliberately boring infrastructure, why the team moved CI back onto developers' machines, and how they're pulling older parts of the app back toward Rails defaults. They also talk about how they use agent docs to steer AI tools toward the patterns they want the codebase to follow. Listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts: podcast.rubyonrails.org/2462… Or watch it on Youtube: youtu.be/3Y42uiA4tdE

One of my favorite parts of agency life is waking up to a GitHub notification that you’ve been removed from a potential client’s repos… …then sipping your coffee and wondering whether it’ll be a few hours, a few days, or… if ever… before they tell you they didn’t accept your proposal. Sometimes that’s the whole rejection letter. 🤣

Quick reminder… mocking another tech stack while they navigate a security incident probably isn’t going to age well for you. Observe. Learn. Amplify the fix.

Today’s PHP situation is a good reminder for anyone responsible for someone else’s software… Reach out to your clients before they have to ask if they’re impacted. Even if the answer is “you’re fine.” They shouldn’t need to see something on the news, wonder about their application, and then figure out who to ask. And if you haven’t reached out yet… it’s not too late to send them a quick note.

A podcast guest had to cancel at the last minute today. I was already sitting here with a microphone plugged in… and perhaps a little too deep into the Halloween candy. 🎃🍬 So, fueled by a minor sugar rush, I recorded ~10 minutes about something that’s been rattling around in my head: 🎙️ Who actually has permission to fix things? The flaky test. The outdated README. The weird workaround everyone has learned to live with. A little solo @_maintainable experiment.

Imagine explaining to someone in 1826 that 200 years from now, you’ll own a container full of cables for devices you haven’t touched in years… which you’ll keep just in case you need one again. You’ll keep this container until you die, at which point someone else will finally throw them away.

Oh ffs
Somewhere right now someone is typing: git psuh. The thefuck plugin is already in Oh My Zsh. Esc Esc fixes your last command: missing sudo, missing -p, typos, forgotten --set-upstream... What's the typo you make most?

I much prefer Nathan Fielder's adaptation of Homer's Odyssey to the other one that came out this year.

Thanks for having me on the show to talk shop @eSquareDesign!
In another clip from the recent Tech for Humans podcast with Robby Russell, we talk about the concept of Makers or Menders and its influence on Robby, why he prefers working on maintaining projects as opposed to starting new ones, and the hit and miss of a new application.
