25 years on, what would bin Laden see? On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we should look at the world through bin Laden's eyes, because our enemies already are nationalpost.com/opinion/25-…

In advance of the 25th commemoration of the 9/11 terror attacks, I'm glad that @nationalpost spotlighted @MaureenBasnicki: "How Maureen Basnicki, Canada’s best-known 9/11 widow, transformed herself into an advocate who fought for terror victims, forged new law and even changed Canada’s calendar." It was an honour to work with her on some of these initiatives. epaper.nationalpost.com/1006…

Thank you @MLInstitute! In this article, Sarah Teich and I argue that Canada should create a dedicated federal fund for victims of transnational repression. Currently, these victims are left to pay for their own safety - a financially untenable situation for some.
“Transnational repression is commonly used to describe the targeting of individuals by foreign actors. It includes the harassment, surveillance and intimidation of specific people, rather than the targeting of institutions or elections. It refers to the ways authoritarian states reach across borders to stalk, threaten and sometimes assault the dissidents, journalists and diaspora members who have fled their own jurisdictions. The targets live here. The governments pursuing them do not,” write @sherylsap and Sarah Teich in @CDNAffairs. Read here⬇️ macdonaldlaurier.ca/victims-…

Proud of this project with @CopelanPeter and Mark Sandler and incredible SMEs. This initiative seeks to examine the EXISTING laws in Canada available to combat antisemitism. Grateful to @MLInstitute & @brianleecrowley for the intellect & moral principle always on display
“In recent years, and with particular intensity since the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel, antisemitism has become increasingly normalized in daily life worldwide. Canada is not immune. Harassment, intimidation, and violence against Jewish Canadians are rising, threatening not only individual safety but also the security and cohesion of entire communities and the country as a whole. Left unchecked, hatred and illegal behaviour erode confidence in the rule of law and weaken Canada’s democratic foundations,” write Peter Copeland (@CopelanPeter), Sheryl Saperia (@sherylsap), and Mark Sandler. Canada has the legal tools to confront these threats — so why isn’t it using them? In “Beyond condemnation: Enforcing Canada’s laws against antisemitism, hate speech,” and support for terrorism, Copeland, Saperia, and Sandler examine how Canada’s existing criminal, immigration, and human rights laws can be employed more effectively to combat antisemitism and protect Jewish Canadians. Completely agree. A national newspaper that brings important issues and common sense perspectives to the fore. Everyone should be reading @nationalpost
Canada needs to be thankful that we have the @nationalpost. I don’t know how they managed to avoid becoming a propaganda rag like all other legacy media, but it can’t have been easy.

This is wild. 😳 @MLInstitute has revealed that a “hostile foreign intelligence service had cloned (their) website… to recruit Canadians to supply sensitive and even classified information by offering research and other contracts that appeared to be from reputable and prestigious Canada think tank.” MLI deserves huge credit for being a clear, principled voice calling out the aggressive behaviour and foreign interference of the Chinese, Russian and Iranian dictatorships. This scheme underscores how some foreign powers engage in aggressive espionage in Canada with impunity.

The most dangerous figure in an ideological dictatorship is rarely the one who looks the part. It is the competent administrator who makes the machinery work, and who knows that a measured tone is the best solvent for an adversary’s resolve.
“Canada is also home to one of the world’s largest Iranian diasporas, and that community lives under the long arm of the same security state — surveilled and intimidated on Canadian soil. The work is carried out by the IRGC’s intelligence arm and Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security, often through criminal proxies; CSIS has confirmed credible death threats here — former federal justice minister Irwin Cotler was the target of an Iranian assassination plot — and scholars who track transnational repression warn it is intensifying against Iranian-Canadians. For these Canadians, ‘Ghalibaf the reasonable’ is no abstraction. He is the man who wrote the threatening letter, swung the stick, and ordered the volley,” writes Avideh Motmaen-Far for MLI Inside Policy. Read here⬇️ macdonaldlaurier.ca/washingt…

Very few Canadian politicians pay sufficient attention to the anniversary of the Air India terrorist attack. Of course @shuvmajumdar is the exception. Thinking of the families of the victims.
Today, at the 41st Air India 182 Memorial, we honoured the 329 innocent people murdered, including 268 Canadians. They were mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, neighbours and friends. We honour them by refusing euphemism and calling out the perpetrators and terror groups that still threaten innocent people at home and abroad. Their memory endures. So does Canada.

Canada was built on a commitment to peace, order, and good government, and on the premise that a liberal democracy can unite a diverse society. In the wake of October 7, that premise is now being tested. In “United in hate: The unlikely ‘red–green–brown’ alliance behind rising antisemitism in Canada,” MLI Senior Fellow Sheryl Saperia (@sherylsap) and Ches W. Parsons examine how far-left activists, Islamist movements, and far-right extremists in Canada have converged around a shared hostility toward Jews, Israel, and the liberal democratic order. The irony is that this hatred confirms what the haters wish to deny: Jewish centrality in the human story. The more furiously the world fixates on this people and its historical homeland, the more it makes the case. …they give Jews more power, not less. nationalpost.com/opinion/why…

To keep prosecuting these antisemitic acts as though they are… a lesser offence is to misread what is happening, and to respond with less than the circumstances demand. The law must call things by their proper name. That name is terrorism. nationalpost.com/opinion/thi…
