The news has been rotten of late with reports of AI agents "going rogue."
These reports have raised critical questions pertaining to agentic governance and security—like, who actually decides how agents behave?
The answer: We do. We must.
But what goes into that? To be sure, acceptable enterprise-grade agentic governance requires much more than drafting a policy doc. It demands more than a presentation; rules in a slide deck don't route requests. And it demands *much* more than trusting model providers.
Running non-deterministic systems—such as AI agents—is an engineering problem. It's not magic. Enterprise-grade agentic security and governance starts with "an engineering approach to containment and governance,” as Microsoft CEO @satyanadella recently wrote.
That approach, he goes on, necessarily revolves around surrounding "non-deterministic models with strong, deterministic system design, human controls, and reliable operating procedures.”
This comes down to at five baseline technological pillars.
1. Deterministic guardrails at both the process and the agent level
2. Enforce least-privilege access everywhere
3. Keep a human-in-the-loop
4. Complete, non-repudiable audit trails
5. Enterprise-grade security, compliance, and data protection underneath it all
This is difficult work. But it's within our control.
Lev Waisberg, Sr. Director of AI Engineering at Coupa, breaks down the approach we're taking at Coupa here:

What makes a legal workflow automation platform enterprise-grade?
There are six key criteria 🔑 :
1. Intake that meets employees where they already work
2. AI-powered triage and routing
3. Orchestration across your existing tech stack
4. No-code configurability owned by legal ops
5. Enterprise governance, guardrails and visibility
6. Fast time-to-value and long-term ownership
Read more about what "enterprise-grade" looks like for each criteria—and why finding such capable legal automation workflow technology partners matters now more than ever—here:

For decades, enterprise technology has been function-specific.
But for teams like legal and procurement, this has created big problems.
Turns out, function-specific systems that were not designed to work seamlessly with one another wreak havoc on cross-functional work.
Which, of course, is the type of work teams like procurement and legal are most often engaged in.
There's a touch of irony here. The tools legal and procurement teams have invested in to make their own work more efficient—from LLM subscriptions to CLMs, ERPs, and everything in between—mandate hours of inefficient work when used in tandem.
Not to mention, they completely inhibit AI agents from conducting complex work autonomously.
But there is a better way.
It starts with orchestration.

Legal teams face more pressure than ever to get it all done.
Work volumes are rising. Regulatory environments are growing more complex. Business teams expect faster answers. And business leaders need legal teams to become more strategic, efficient, and innovative—all without a corresponding increase in resources.
Legal intake, automation, and orchestration technology can help.
In fact, certain legal intake, automation, and orchestration platforms can prove genuinely transformative—essential infrastructure in the age of AI agents.
That's why, when evaluating this market, legal teams should look beyond the question of whether a platform can build forms or route requests.
Not all platforms are created equal, or built for the same purpose.

A note from Coupa CEO Leagh Turner on what—and who—Coupa Intake and Orchestration powered by Tonkean is for.
(Hint, it's not just procurement.)
"This is what Tonkean provides us: a way to make all of an organization’s components — its technology, people, systems, processes, policies, and AI agents across departments — work better together.
Coupa now connects the agentic enterprise precisely because it is ... not constrained to any single department."

Here's a legal agent for a super common use case: requesting legal help directly via email 📬
The agent can:
* Monitor an email inbox
* Automatically create outside conflict waivers based on the emailed info
* Orchestrate the approval process (assign owners, kick off reviews, etc.)
* Give me a direct way to track approval progress in real-time
As an end-user, the experience is organic and interactive. If you don't want to, you never have to leave your inbox 🙂

Why is now legal ops' orchestration moment?
Because, in practical terms, orchestration puts legal ops in control, ensuring that:
✅ Every legal request begins in a structured, guided way
✅ Every decision follows policy, automatically
✅ Every stakeholder is engaged at the right moment
✅ Every system is connected and reflects the same source of truth
✅ Every agent has what it needs to operate autonomously, reliably
Orchestration also solves for fragmentation.
Consider a simple NDA request. In most organizations, it touches intake, CRM data, templates, approvals, document generation, and signature tools. Each piece exists.
None are inherently connected. The burden of coordination falls on humans. Orchestration removes that burden. It ensures the process executes as a cohesive whole, while humans oversee.

Legal operations is crossing into its orchestration era.
Legal ops teams are coming to realize that technological firepower and even process adoption are no longer the core bottlenecks.
What sets successful legal ops teams apart is, instead, how they use technology—with what amount of cohesion, connectivity, reliability, and control; by what means we are able to transcend SaaS’s structural limitations.
The legal ops teams who use tech the best are using orchestration.
