Today, on Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize that Tempe’s story is part of a much older one. We honor the O’odham and Piipaash peoples, whose ancestral lands include what is now Tempe. These communities have lived, farmed and built homes along the Salt and Gila rivers for generations. Their cultures and traditions continue to thrive today. The City of Tempe partnered with the Indigenous arts collective Hekiu to create a land acknowledgment video that is played before every City Council meeting. The video celebrates Indigenous culture through performances by two traditional dance groups brought together by Hekiu: • Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Traditional Dancers (Onk Akimel O’odham) • Bird Singing and Dancing by the River (Xalychidom Piipaash) We're grateful to Hekiu and the performers who helped bring this land acknowledgment to life.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Tempe area and has advised City of Tempe staff that conditions would be unsafe for a farmers market on Sunday, Oct. 11. While our community was extremely excited to bring this new market to City Hall Plaza, the safety of marketgoers and vendors is of utmost importance. The market will instead launch next week, on Sunday, Oct. 18 and will occur on most Sundays after that. You can learn more about the market on tempe.gov/CityHallFarmersMar…

Storms are headed our way, Tempe! Heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are possible today and Sunday. Take a few minutes to get ready before the storms arrive. 🏡 Secure outdoor items that could blow away in strong winds. 📱 Charge your phone and keep an eye on weather alerts. 🚗 Never drive through flooded roads. It takes less water than you might think to sweep a vehicle away. Turn around, don't drown. ⚡ When thunder roars, go indoors. Stay inside until at least 30 minutes after the last thunder. Need sandbags? Tempe has free sand and bags available at Benedict Sports Complex, 490 W. Guadalupe Road. Bring your own shovel and be prepared to fill your own bags. Stay safe, Tempe!
