Two excellent Beatle books. Highly recommended.
Thanks to everyone who packed out Another Story Bookshop where last Thursday, on Global Beatles Day, Beatles in Canada author Piers Hemmingsen and I (author of Fashioning the Beatles) gave separate but related talks on the Beatles’ Toronto connection via fashion and record and ticket sales in 1966– the last time the Fabs played here as part of their final North American tour. Surprising even to me was Piers’s reveal that it wasn’t a very good year for them at all, stemming from a series of managerial blunders and more. No wonder they soon after burrowed deep into the studio to record their next breakthrough— Sgt. Pepper. The opposite was true on the fashion front; the London Look, which the Beatles embodied, popularized and helped to disseminate on the back of their unprecedented fame, was everywhere in 1966, flaunted even by the kids lining up at Maple Leaf Gardens for that final August 17 show, as seen in period photographs we presented as part of our joint presentation. Mark that date by the way— Piers is organizing another Beatles in Toronto tribute on August 17 of this year to commemorate the 60th anniversary. It will be at the King Edward Hotel where the Beatles stayed when last here. More to come… #FashioningTheBeatles #TheBeatlesinCanada @beatlesincanada @AnotherStoryTO @sutherlandbooks @WCA_LitAgency

Remember flexi discs?
Cheap, effective promotional records.
Usually distributed in magazines, newspapers or cereal boxes.
In one story today, they were attached to helium balloons.

The man who directed the Wendy’s commercial that featured this famous line has passed away.
Joe Sedelmaier was a control freak, had an eye for talent, and was utterly unique.
(And he kicked me off the set of my own commercial once)
A tribute today.

VW advertising wasn’t only funny and smart, it was self-deprecating.
Which made it singular in auto marketing.
