Aging does not appear to follow the same molecular script for everyone, according to an 8-year study of more than 300 women.
The findings in Science reveal that individual molecular trajectories of aging can diverge substantially from population-wide patterns and are shaped not only by genetics but also by factors such as circadian rhythm, seasonality, and environmental exposures. Learn more: scim.ag/4ikMUfG
Drs. Yanagisawa and Mignot received the 2026 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research for their pivotal work in the discovery of the orexin (hypocretin) system and its role in narcolepsy.
Learn more in the Clinical Implications of Basic Research article “The Legacy of Orexin (Hypocretin) Research in Narcolepsy and Beyond” by Sebastiaan Overeem, MD, PhD, and Birgitte R. Kornum, PhD: nej.md/4A71sWP

ALT An illustrated diagram from the Clinical Implications of Basic Research article "The Legacy of Orexin (Hypocretin) Research in Narcolepsy and Beyond." Panel A shows the orexin system, discovered in 1998, which consists of two neuropeptides produced in the lateral hypothalamus and two G-protein–coupled receptors expressed in most areas of the brain. Panel B shows deficiency of orexin signaling leading to narcolepsy symptoms in both dogs and rodents. Panel C shows that human patients with narcolepsy lack orexin peptides in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which has led to a reliable diagnostic test. Panel D shows therapeutics from 2014 to the Present.
