A simple cheek swab gave one University of Miami student the chance to save a life. After joining the Gift of Life stem cell registry during her freshman year, Alexandra Burnham-Ugalde was matched just months later with a patient battling blood cancer, an incredibly rare opportunity inspired by the loss of her grandmother to acute myeloid leukemia. “Knowing I gave somebody a second chance at life and hope for their family is just the best feeling in the world,” Alexandra said. Today, Alexandra is sharing her story to encourage others to join the stem cell registry and become potential lifesaving donors. Her message is simple, one small act could give someone else hope when they need it most. Learn more: spr.ly/6018BECjC6

Snoring, constant fatigue, and waking up multiple times a night may seem normal, but they can be warning signs of sleep apnea, a condition that can impact more than just sleep. 💤 New research from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine highlights how diagnosing and treating sleep apnea early may help protect memory, support brain health, and reduce long-term dementia risk. Through care @umiamihealth, patients have seen firsthand how treatment can restore energy, improve sleep quality, and support overall well-being. 🩺 Learn more about how sleep health protects brain health 🧠: loom.ly/NfI95SU

This World Cancer Day, we are reminded that cancer is more than a diagnosis; it’s a deeply personal journey. United by uniqueness, each patient’s story calls for care that is as individualized as they are. Rising 12 stories above UHealth’s downtown Miami campus, the Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building stands as a symbol of that commitment. Its clinical floors house a clinic with 27 infusion bays, advanced imaging, an on-site pharmacy and supportive services that care for the whole person. Just floors away, AI-driven labs and glass-walled research neighborhoods unite experts—accelerating breakthroughs from the lab bench to patient's bedside. The Griffin Cancer Research Building is a promise to patients, families and communities that the future of cancer care will be defined by innovation, compassion and an unrelenting pursuit of cures. We extend our deepest thanks to Carlos Migoya for his extraordinary tenure as CEO of @JacksonHealth and for his steadfast partnership with @UMiamiHealth and the Miller School of Medicine. Carlos’s commitment to academic medicine and community health has helped shape a stronger healthcare system for Miami-Dade County, the state of Florida, and beyond. We are grateful for his partnership and leadership and look forward to continuing this important work with @DavidZambrana5 when he becomes JHS’s newly appointed CEO. As a ‘Cane himself and a proven healthcare leader in our community, we know the UHealth-Jackson partnership will continue to flourish with David as CEO in the years and decades to come. Congratulations to both.
After nearly 15 years of dedicated leadership, Carlos Migoya announced that his tenure as CEO of Jackson Health System will end on May 31. He will leave behind a legacy of transformation that will be felt for generations. Since taking on the role in 2011, his visionary leadership and deep commitment to this community helped transform Jackson into a health system defined by modern facilities, compassionate care, and an extraordinary team of professionals. More than buildings or milestones, his impact is seen in the lives changed and the trust built across our community. Thank you, Carlos, for your leadership, heart, and steadfast commitment to Jackson and the health of our community. When one chapter closes, another one opens. David Zambrana, who started his career as a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital and today serves as Jackson's president and chief operating officer, was named Jackson's next CEO. For the last six years, Carlos has worked alongside David, preparing him for this transition. “He's the most prepared leader in Jackson’s 107-year history,” Carlos said. “The trust and respect our teams already feel for David make him, hands-down, the best choice for our future.”
