The first woman to race in both the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 arrived with a Michigan physics degree—and grease under her fingernails.
Janet Guthrie earned her B.S. in physics from U-M in 1960, then worked as an aerospace research-and-development engineer. She was also a licensed pilot and reached the initial qualifying round for NASA’s first scientist-astronaut selection.
Racing began with a used Jaguar. Guthrie built engines, repaired bodywork and slept in her tow car to save money for parts and entry fees. In 1976, she became the first woman in a @NASCAR premier-series superspeedway race. A year later, she qualified for both the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500—firsts that forced two traditional sports to make room.
Her 1978 ninth-place finish at Indianapolis remained the best by a woman until 2005. Today, her helmet and fire suit rest in the Smithsonian. @umichLSA @IMS
