Redistricting and gerrymandering get used like they mean the same thing. They don’t. Every 10 years the U.S. takes a census, and district lines get redrawn to match where people actually live. That part is routine. Gerrymandering is when whoever draws those lines uses the process to help one party over another. Who does the drawing depends on the state. In some it’s the state legislature. Others hand it to an independent commission of people who aren’t elected, and some use a mix of the two. Lauren Woodman of @USAFacts explains how it works.
