Who remembers “Dr Death,” the American doctor who worked at Mnene Mission Hospital in Mberengwa and Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo?
By the time Dr Michael Swango arrived in Zimbabwe in 1994, he had already served prison time for poisoning coworkers in Illinois. U.S. prosecutors later said he secured the Mnene job with a letter falsely claiming he was in good standing with U.S. medical boards.
Swango spent about five months at Mpilo gaining clinical experience before returning to Mnene. In July 1995, Mnene suspended him. U.S. investigators documented two patients there who survived toxic injections. Zimbabwean officials also linked him to five suspicious patient deaths.
In June 1997, U.S. authorities arrested Swango at Chicago’s O’Hare airport. He was on his way to take up another medical job, this time in Saudi Arabia.
In September 2000, he pleaded guilty to murdering three patients at a veterans’ hospital in New York in 1993. A federal judge sentenced him to three consecutive life terms without parole.
Swango never stood trial in Zimbabwe.
