Whether you think he would have made a great PM or not, it's notable that far more Canadians know who Tommy Douglas was than know who about 3/4 of our former PMs were. Maybe it's so in most countries, but Canada has had a significant share of benchwarmers in its highest office.
Just him. The list has only one name.

New for me: I’ve joined @globeandmail, where I’m continuing to cover AI. That means companies developing this economy-, and society-changing technology; funds financing it; the research advancing it; infrastructure built for it; and policy governments are developing for it.

This is a great illustration of a thing that political campaigns understand that popular narratives about election campaigns often miss: swing voters tend to matter less to outcomes than motivation
The @Conservative_BC actually received 50,000 fewer votes than in 2024 (but won 20 more seats) because the @bcndp vote dropped by 275.000 (29%) while the @BCGreens got 23,000 more votes than last time (+13%) - still some ballots to be counted.

It's particularly clear in this case because of Eby's blatantly cynical decision to call an election two years early for no good reason, but in general, you'll find more answers about why someone wins by looking at turnout than you will in trying to game out vote flips

The battle Carney is referring to, Queenston Heights, is one of the most insane episodes in Canadian history. Among other things: 1. Half the U.S. force refused to cross the Niagara to take part, and the boatmen eventually stranded their own commander on the U.S. side.
On this day in 1812.

4. When the U.S. troops surrendered, a whole bunch of their fellow soldiers who had apparently been hiding in the woods/underbrush this whole time, suddenly emerged from concealment to surrender, too

In the strange ways that history folds together: one of the U.S. commanders who surrendered during this bungled invasion of Canada, Winfield Scott, would later lead the invasion of Mexico. So Roger Sheaffe > Santa Anna, I guess.

This is literally the only good tweet about the TO mayoral race so far. Where's @shawnmicallef impersonating William Lyon Mackenzie when you need him?
Bro couldn’t even say hello.

Doug Ford: Who wants to bet I can pull the plug on my own government with a year and four months left to go in my mandate, blame it on vaguely Trump-related reasons, and pay no political price? David Eby: Hold my beer.

In the Skin of a Lion. Set in the 1910s to 1930s, written in the 1980s, but describes a Toronto that feels pretty much exactly the same today, where immigration and construction are the perpetual defining features.
What’s the Great Toronto Novel?

It also helps that Ondaatje has arguably the most lyrical prose style in the English language

Canada-U.S. trade talks have collapsed tonight. Donald Trump's latest round of tariffs will come into effect at 12.01 am. Mark Carney says he will retaliate "dollar-for-dollar." If he does that, a U.S. official says Trump will be presented with options for more retaliation.

Canada is suspending negotiations. Carney says the U.S. asked for "last-minute changes" that were "unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal."

The U.S. says Canada made last-minute demands and ultimately wanted more relief on 232 tariffs than the U.S. would give. So it's an expansion of the continental trade war, with no clear limit now on how large it will get.

If you want some idea of what today/tonight's deadline negotiating could look like, here's an anecdote from Bob Lighthizer about admonishing Justin Trudeau's advisors for "sneaky" changes to the wording of USMCA in the final hours of talks in 2018 theglobeandmail.com/world/us…

Less than 48 hours from Trump's latest tariffs on Canada, sources point to two holdups in talks: autos, with disagreement over tariff level and whether only U.S. or all USMCA content is exempted; and lumber, which the U.S. wants excluded from this deal theglobeandmail.com/canada/a…

Canada, I'm told, is working on options for retaliation if Trump goes ahead with the new tariffs on Wednesday
