My favorite kind of competitions are about to start up. The "just bring your skills" kind.
It's the ones where, as a competitor, you have the fewest reasons to blame for poor performance.
Quake, UT, FGC.
Arenas $10,000 Cash Cups inbound! First $1,000 "Winner Stays" 1v1 Power Rankings competitions taking place in Brazil.

There is this broad misconception that "open matchmaking" (complete removal of SBMM) would be OK because "good players are rare" and "lower skill players will likely end up in a lobby of other lower skill players."
But what happens when we actually run the math?
Let's look at it from the perspective of a lower 50% skill player in a pool of 100,000. Remember we are simply talking raw percentages. The top 10% of players would be the raw mathematical count of 10,000 players (for example).
Parameters:
100,000 matchmaking pool
2 Teams
5v5 Match
Let's pretend some lowly casual filth in the bottom 50% presses the matchmake button (no SBMM):
Probability there are ZERO Top 10% players in the other 9 slots?
.90 to the 9th power, or rather...
= 0.3874
about 39%
Put another way, there will be at least one top 10% player in 61% of the this low-skill player's matches.
Now, Let's just look at the raw statistics of a randomly generated lobby, and how often high skilled, and extremely high skill players would be selected. (Remove the one slot being filled by some low skill "casual"):
Top 10% - 65.1%
Top 5% - 40.1%
Top 1% - 9.6%
Top 0.1% - 1.0%
What's the conclusion here?
A randomly selected player will encounter a top-10% player frequently, but they will encounter a top-1% player relatively rarely.
HOWEVER, perception is critical. Your typical mid-level and lower skill player cannot distinguish, and does not care, if they are being railroaded by a top 10% player or a top 1% player. The distinction is meaningless.
This is just the basics, assuming a pool of 100,000 players that have some skill based MMR attached to them. But, as you can see in the math, most lobbies would contain at least one top 10% player, and it doesn't fall that far when we start talking top 5%.
And remember, the distinction between being exploded by a top 10% player versus a top 1% player is basically meaningless.
This is why most matchmaking systems run at least some form of SBMM (even if relatively loose). Even loose skill matchmaking is better than nothing at all.

Join the club! It's a campaign of hate and intimidation, not aimed at convincing anyone of the merits of their position, but to bully and scare advocates into silence. They're spamming spammed with 1000's of "why doesn't someone kill this guy" memes.
This is a big change for Ranked. This addresses a number of frequent community issues, most notably are those that screenshot "Unreal in my Bronze, Silver, Gold lobby."
This comes with a tradeoff. Longer queue times. So you'll see an increase in screenshots of players that experience longer queue times. This is in an effort to take the extra time needed to find you quality matches in your rank tier.
What this means long-term (likely coming sooner rather than later) is that we have to go through and consolidate playlists that have always had too few players in the queue in Ranked.
Here's a look at our Native Water Template with actual biome mask support to bring to life water variations on Aloha. This system is completely separated from epics default water system and supports rivers, lakes, etc.
Notice how the rainforest has darker green water!
You can find a link to download the system in the comments.

This is all quite funny. They linked to a paywalled Bloomberg article nobody would read and then made up a bunch of wild quote in the thread and reported them as fact.
