When I looked at which factors influence a Shopify app's MRR, the biggest was its age. The oldest fifth earn roughly 100x what the newest fifth do, and age is more important than the number of reviews or average rating. This shows how hard it is for new entrants in competitive categories.

Shopify's App Store keeps growing, but most apps aren't. App numbers rise about 28% a year while shop numbers rise about 12%, and the 16 biggest apps take roughly 40% of the revenue. barn2.com/blog/shopify-app-s…

New in WooCommerce Product Filters 2.2: show variations as separate products, and add text input filters with partial matching for attributes, taxonomies and custom fields. barn2.com/wordpress-plugins/… Existing customers: update to 2.2.
Most WooCommerce stores don't need a request a quote plugin. Hiding your price loses sales, and if you already quote with a formula, your product page can do the maths for the customer. barn2.com/blog/the-dangers-o…
WordPress can't search inside your PDFs, so a phrase on page 12 never turns up. Document Library Pro reads the text inside PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and makes it searchable. barn2.com/blog/wordpress-pdf…

At the 2025 Shopify conference, everyone I met was really positive about how their app was doing. At the same event this year, several people admitted to me that they're no longer growing.
I wanted to know if this is backed by data so I did the research and discovered that things have got harder. The problem is the number of apps is growing more than the amount of new stores, so app companies aren't benefitting from Shopify's success.

Shopify vs WooCommerce: who has the bigger market share? Both win. Shopify leads 4.7 to 1 across the biggest 100,000 sites, while WooCommerce leads 1.26 to 1 across the whole web. barn2.com/blog/shopify-vs-wo…

WooCommerce Product Table 5.0 is here: a faster engine for large catalogs, multi-select filters with counts, infinite scroll and shareable table URLs. It's a free update from your dashboard. barn2.com/blog/woocommerce-p…
If you protect documents on your WordPress site, can someone still download the file by pasting its URL?
On most sites, yes. Document Library Pro 4.2 now moves those files out of the uploads folder, so only people with access can download them.

It's hard to work out which is the leading ecommerce platform because WooCommerce has so many "phantom" sites, which run it but don't actually have an online shop. BuiltWith estimates this at 46% 👻🤯. It's unfair of them to assume that all Shopify stores are active, though - yet again, making it impossible to compare.
