Climate-driven extremes, like the El Niño storms, drought, and intense wildfires are the new normal. Are you prepared if disaster strikes? Your family may not all be together during an emergency, so think about how you will communicate and where you will meet. Be flood prepared and established a family communication plan for emergencies. You can find more resources on how to plan for a flood at bit.ly/floodprepca

The numbers are in! With the world’s largest wildlife crossing set to open across the 101 this December, this good news from Colorado shows exactly why we’re pursuing more of these across California (multiple already open and 37 are currently in progress!).
A wildlife crossing in Colorado has helped reduce animal-vehicle collisions by a staggering 91% in just 10 months. The $15 million bridge is currently North America's largest wildlife overpass, spanning six lanes of Interstate 25.

The weather may be changing but the threat of wildfire remains.👇
Don’t let cooler weather fool you. 🍂 Fall has historically brought some of California’s largest and most destructive wildfires. Dry vegetation, wind, and low humidity can still create dangerous conditions. Give your home a safety check: 🌿 Move combustible materials at least five feet from your home. 🏠 Clear leaves and debris from roofs and rain gutters. 🔥 Check that vents are ember-resistant; this means 1/16-inch to 1/8-inch corrosion-resistant, non-combustible metal mesh designed to block wind-driven fire embers and flames from entering a structure’s attic, crawl space, or eaves during a wildfire. Cooler weather doesn’t mean the wildfire threat is over. Stay vigilant, and don’t let your guard down.

Our agencies are stepping up to help communities prepare for El Niño. ➡️ @CA_DWR has 4.4 MILLION sandbags ready and is inspecting all 1,600 miles of levees throughout the state ➡️ @TheCACoast is approving emergency permits for coastal property owners ➡️ @CAStateParks continues to expedite work at state beaches to recover from recent coastal erosion and prepare for incoming storms
Replying to @CAgovernor
We're positioning millions of sandbags, inspecting levees, and making sure our communities have the support they need. I'm encouraging Californians across the state to get ready, too ⬇️ gov.ca.gov/2026/10/21/govern…

What would life without energy efficiency be like? Wasted energy. Higher bills. That doesn’t sound good. When the CEC was created 50 yrs ago, one of our roles was to implement efficiency standards that helped us use our fav appliances but with less stress on the grid. CONT'D

Not every wildfire makes the news. Many are stopped before they have a chance to grow. While California may be experiencing fewer wildfire starts, new fires are still igniting every day. Over the past week, 157 new wildfires started across the state. CAL FIRE’s goal is to contain 95% of wildfires at 10 acres or less. Meeting that goal takes a fast response and decisive action before flames have a chance to spread. 📸 The Oct. 12 Rock Fire is one example. @CALFIRENEU and partner agencies responded and contained the fire at just 1.5 acres, preventing it from growing larger. These smaller fires are a reminder of why every response matters, even when it doesn't make the headlines.

🌊 Hazardous beach conditions are expected along Ventura and Los Angeles County beaches, including the Malibu coast. As California prepares for a potential El Niño season, staying alert to changing weather and coastal conditions is especially important. Large waves and powerful rip currents can sweep people out to sea. Stay out of the water, keep off rocks and jetties, and follow guidance from local officials. Stay informed and check the latest forecasts and weather alerts at Weather.gov.

🚒 Strengthening California’s Firefighting Workforce Wildfire readiness starts with having the people, resources, and training to respond when it matters most. Since 2019, California has made sustained investments in CAL FIRE’s firefighting workforce, adding year-round engine staffing, permanent positions, and relief and surge capacity to strengthen statewide readiness. These investments have helped build the Department’s largest workforce to date. Today, CAL FIRE’s budget supports over 14,000 positions, continuing this commitment to preparedness and response. These investments have helped: 🔥 Expand year-round engine staffing and increase relief and surge staffing. 👩‍🚒 Grow California’s firefighting workforce and strengthen response capacity. 🪓 Diversify hand-crew capacity. 🎓 Modernize firefighter training, improve access to certifications, and add three new training centers. From the fireline to the training ground, investing in our workforce helps CAL FIRE prepare for and respond to California’s evolving wildfire threats.

As the federal administration pushes to open California's coast to new offshore oil drilling and weaken longstanding coastal protections, we’re taking action to protect the ocean and the communities that depend on it. For the first time in more than a decade, California is establishing new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), protecting an additional 15,000 acres of coastal waters and bringing us to 22.2% conserved on our way to our 30x30 goal! What does that mean for Californians? Healthier ocean ecosystems. Stronger protections for marine life. And a more resilient coast for the families and communities whose livelihoods, traditions and way of life depend on it. These underwater refuges help kelp forests thrive, protect critical habitat for fish and other marine life, and support ocean health as climate change brings warmer waters. And in a historic first, two of the new MPAs were proposed by California Native American Tribes, creating new opportunities for Tribal stewardship and recognizing generations of cultural connections to our coast. And while Washington pushes for more drilling, California is choosing more protection. Learn more at: gov.ca.gov/2026/10/19/govern… @30x30CA @CATribalAffairs @OPC_California

Air and ground resources are actively working to contain the #NorteFire in Orange County.   CAL FIRE prepositioned resources were in the area and ready to support initial attack efforts, allowing additional resources to respond quickly. CAL FIRE’s aerial firefighting fleet, the largest civilian aerial firefighting fleet in the world, is supporting ground operations alongside partner agencies with water and retardant drops as firefighters work to contain the fire.   Under Red Flag Warning conditions, protecting lives and property and stopping the fire’s spread remain top priorities.   For the latest fire information, including acreage, containment and evacuation updates, download the AwareCA app at aware.ca.gov. @OCFireAuthority
