These little penguins don't know what's coming—but tragically, they soon will. Nearly 400 Australian species are under threat from bird flu according to a federal government assessment of over 2,000 native species. Nearly one in five species have been rated as facing extreme, very high or high risk. Professor John Woinarski, a leading conservation scientist at Charles Darwin University who helped devise the analysis, said it's bleaker than they previously considered. “We are going to get major consequences for many species and our bird and mammal diversity is likely to suffer substantial impacts from this disease.” Just unbearable. 1/2
