one of our portfolio companies asked for a stylized anime look in three.js. i was all in.
i curated 100 free clips of glowing lines, dating back to 1933!
movingimagearchive.com/colle…
the internet is full of forgotten films
so i built a website with over 120,000 historical public-domain clips, dating 1894 to 2021!
all free to use, and waiting to be seen again.

October’s Meridian is next week— but first, a look back at September at @tiatplace
Three speakers, three very different worlds. @DrCapsoul built a live 3D world the whole room walked through on their phones. Roxane Noel used medieval philosophy to find the question behind every user answer. @reathchris argued that when aesthetics are free to copy, identity lives in continuity.
Next Wednesday at @SoEx_SF, more range:
• @design4use with 30+ years into interface design, going from designing for billions to designing for himself
• @nomadcharles worked on NASA’s first app and many other things, on the interface design of tea ceremony 🍵
Come for the tea, stay for the craft. Few seats remaining, RSVP below 👇

been building ref for the past few months.
saving references is easy. knowing why you picked them is the hard part.
ref helps you understand the patterns behind what you save, so you can design with them.
these are so rad 🫶
Raw notes and doodles at @valiocon 🌱
Thank you @drewwilson for bringing this community together.
Design! Design! Design!
still thinking about Valiocon. met some incredible people, caught up with old friends, and talked about 3D, anime, and video games on stage. ty @drewwilson such a special vibe and for putting it all together.
shout out airbnb crew for vibes and moral support @floguo @pauline_makes @tinathetechie @liammatteson @linathelam @belindahuang
ty ML this was so thoughtful🫶
Some more takeaways from today at @valiocon from @DrCapsoul and @saturday. Shoutout @drewwilson for putting together a special event
I loved how both Evan and Mackey talked about finding moments of joy in hobbies and childhood sources of inspiration. when we think about finding a flow state we can think back to times as a kid watching anime or fishing, for example, where we got lost in the work
Evan
- go outside your medium for inspiration. films, video games, childhood hobbies
- challenge yourself to think in 3D not just 2D - what’s an immersive 3D world you can build for people to experience. Evan built a presentation that did this and took us through a design journey of his work in a 3d prototype instead of static slides
- when you feel overwhelmed or burnt out go touch grass, return to childhood sources of joy and earliest forms of inspiration
- find a way to bring who you are into your work. go do side quests. you are what you do
Mackey
- most meaningful decisions begin with a belief that you can do it, some unreasonable confidence and not a qualification for having done it before. belief can help us become skilled
- knowing more should help us notice more. that simple moment of noticing something can be powerful especially when it comes to defending and protecting great work
- pick your battles. if you feel strongly about one thing dig in and defend it and let everything else go

some of many bits to remember from @valiocon…
solving the same problem but with increasing scope: a bandaid < a solution < a system < a society @pauline_makes exercising creativity by breaking problem-solving limitations like interface design, digital media, and even limitations of reality
embracing flow and consciousness @floguo cognition is a full body experience / individuals can increase our freedom, autonomy, and impact in the world by pursuing what is good, true, and beautiful
changing deep-rooted (interaction / construction) paradigms we accept as is @brdrck instead of solving the surface-level problem of vector drawing or creating an ai pipeline that obscures the process, building a solution deeper than even the engines that run the output
letting accumulated identities and practices become professional identity @DrCapsoul being a product designer at heart while retaining the craft and creativity of a 3d artist + cultivating consistent sources of personal inspiration to build one of a kind experiences
we’re all thrown into the act of work - how do we transform the experience? @WesleyBancroft a way to approach creative work as an offering and labor of love / love sustains quality of work over time
whatever your gift is, just follow it / let learning experiences compound into your own practice and value proposition - my uber driver
grateful to be able to share the stage with some many talented folks. flo is the 🐐
“in product design, you’re working on a flat surface. in 3d, you can build anything”
@DrCapsoul is, without a doubt, one of the most talented 3d artists i’m lucky enough to know. what a blessing to learn about his creative journey 🧱
