JUST IN: Cannabis legalization in the U.S. has been associated with increased hospitalizations due to cardiovascular issues, including heart attacks.
The peer-reviewed study, published in the journal BMJ Open, looked at data from more than 50 million hospital discharges between 2012 and 2018 in the Western region of the U.S., where by 2018, 98 percent of the population lived in or bordered a state where cannabis use had been legalized.
It found that the legalization of recreational cannabis sales in the region beginning in 2014 was linked to an increased rate of hospitalization for heart failure, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and atrial fibrillation, compared to regions whose states did not broadly legalize cannabis. Atrial fibrillation refers to an irregular and rapid heart rhythm.
Specifically, each year of legal cannabis sales was associated with a 2.3 percent increase in hospitalization rate for atrial fibrillation, a 3.1 percent increase for heart attack, and a 3.7 percent increase for heart failure, the study said.
The Western region includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
Individuals admitted to hospitals in this region were a median age of 51, compared to a median age of 55 for other regions. The individuals from the Western region also tended to identify more as Hispanic, Asian, or Native American and less often as black or white compared to other regions.
JUST IN: A hacking group aligned with the Chinese regime used an A.I. tool to accelerate cyberattacks against hundreds of organizations worldwide.
This includes an attack involving U.S. technology company ConnectWise, Microsoft said.
Microsoft attributed the compromise of ConnectWise’s Cloud Backup application credentials to Storm-0940, a China state-aligned hacking group it has tracked since 2021.
The stolen credentials allowed the attackers to exploit access already granted to ConnectWise applications by customers using Microsoft’s cloud services.
The hackers used ARTEX, a Chinese-developed AI security-testing tool, to automate attacks targeting government agencies, defense contractors, financial institutions, technology companies, and other organizations.
ConnectWise Responds to Attack
ConnectWise confirmed unauthorized access to credentials associated with its Cloud Backup service, formerly known as SkyKick.
In an Oct. 25 update, the company said its existing backup archives remained encrypted, isolated, and preserved, with no indication that they had been compromised. It also reported no indication that other ConnectWise products or services were affected.

JUST IN: A CCP insider revealed that former Chinese Vice Premier Hu Chunhua missed an official anniversary event for health reasons.
This pushes back against online rumors that Hu and his family had gone missing ahead of a key Party meeting.
Hu, 63, did not attend a ceremony in Beijing on Oct. 22 commemorating the CCP’s historic retreat during the Chinese civil war known as the “Long March,” two days before the CCP was scheduled to open its Fifth Plenum on Oct. 26.
The four-day meeting is expected to draw attention to political maneuvering within the Party leadership.
Hu’s absence fueled speculation about his political fate and the whereabouts of his family.
However, an insider with connections to senior CCP officials told The Epoch Times on Oct. 24 that Hu had missed the event because of health problems.

JUST IN: In the final 10-day stretch before election day, rapper Nicki Minaj joined President Donald Trump in Michigan to boost Republican Mike Rogers in his tight race for the U.S. Senate.
“Let’s make some noise for this great man,” Minaj said, referring to Rogers. “This is a major turning point for our country. And when you’re in major states like Michigan, we need this to be a leader in the movement that’s happening right now.”
It was a packed house on Oct. 25 for the nearly two-and-a-half-hour rally at the McMorran Place hockey arena in Port Huron, a city on the St. Clair River that borders Canada.
The day marked the first time a sitting U.S. president has visited Port Huron, the largest city in Michigan’s agriculture-heavy “thumb” region with more than 28,000 residents.
A Different Opponent
The former congressman says he is running against a vastly different candidate than Slotkin—Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive populist who Rogers has cast as “too extreme for Michigan.” Rogers has made allegations that El-Sayed, who is Muslim, supports and has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood through his extended family.
Trump repeated those claims on the stage in Port Huron, but took the rhetoric a step further, calling El-Sayed a “jihadist” and claiming he’s allied with terrorists.
El-Sayed has repeatedly denied having sympathy for or links to Islamist terrorist groups.
Rogers has pointed to comments El-Sayed’s sister made online during the 2012 Egyptian presidential election referencing their birth mother’s Muslim Brotherhood activism in the 1970s.
El-Sayed responded by saying he has never spoken to his mother about the Islamist group, and was mostly raised by his father and stepmother.
The Muslim Brotherhood, also known as the Society of Muslim Brothers, was founded in Egypt in 1928, and exists as a pan-Islamist movement that initially sought to oppose British colonial rule.
Branches exist in multiple countries and operate differently, with some defending the use of violence and largely opposing equal rights for women and LGBT groups.
BREAKING: Leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won reelection in Brazil’s presidential runoff, defeating right-wing Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro.
Polls were supposed to close at 5 p.m. local time, but the Supreme Court extended voting by two hours after voters faced bad weather and issues with public transportation.
Bolsonaro, son of imprisoned former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, led the first round of elections three weeks ago with 47 percent of the vote to Lula’s 45 percent.
Polls showed the candidates essentially tied heading into the runoff, with Lula seeking a fourth term.
Accusations of Election Interference
The Brazilian election cycle has been filled with claims that the Trump administration has been trying to influence it.
Trump hosted Bolsonaro at the White House in May and praised him in a June 2 Truth Social post as a “smart young man who loves his Country, Brazil, very much!”
Lula’s government denied visas in July to two U.S. State Department officials. A Brazilian official told Reuters that the government suspected that the visit was intended to influence the election and undermine confidence in its voting system.
The U.S. State Department rejected that allegation, saying the State Department officials had planned routine meetings on election integrity, religious freedom, and freedom of expression.

A Democrat hasn’t won a Texas Senate race in decades. In these midterms, some feel that could change.
Amid a fractious election cycle midway through the second Trump administration, early in-person voting is already underway in the contest between Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, and Texas state Rep. James Talarico, a Democrat.
The Lone Star State has long been seen as a conservative bulwark—but Paxton, who defeated Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) in the GOP primary runoff, is far from guaranteed a victory against the Democrat from Austin. Conversations on the ground revealed support for, and opposition to, both candidates.
Most polling shows the Democrat with a slight lead. VoteHub, a political media organization that tracks early voting across the country, estimates that early votes and mail votes so far tilt toward Talarico. The group sees him narrowly on track to victory, an outcome that would make him the first Democrat to win a Senate race in Texas since 1988.
Not everyone is so sure.

The FCC has blocked two video devices from the U.S. market, saying that both contain computer chips manufactured by a blacklisted Chinese tech giant.
The U.S. telecom agency announced on Oct. 22 that it barred a dashboard camera and a wireless video transmitter from being marketed or sold in the United States.
The ban was issued because the gadgets contain chips produced by Huawei’s subsidiary HiSilicon—a company that advertises these components as “designed for the surveillance market” with a built-in “detection algorithm for human faces,” according to the FCC.
Huawei has been on the FCC’s Covered List since March 12, 2021. The agency’s national security blacklist also targets a roster of other Chinese technology and telecom firms, including equipment manufacturer ZTE, video surveillance giants Hikvision and Dahua, and telecommunications service providers China Mobile International USA and China Telecom (Americas) Corp.
Sen. Jim Banks (R–Ind.), who serves on the Armed Services Committee, applauded the FCC for imposing the ban.
“Great work by Chairman [Brendan Carr] to protect Americans from surveillance by foreign adversaries like China,” Banks wrote in an X post on Oct. 22.

Ten noncitizens have been arrested and charged for allegedly casting votes illegally in various elections in North Carolina.
Three people were from Germany, two from Jamaica, and one each from El Salvador, Haiti, Canada, Panama, and Montenegro, Homeland Security said in an Oct. 23 statement. Nine are lawful permanent residents and one is an illegal immigrant, the agency said. They were apprehended on Oct. 14 and 15.
The illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Edduard Omar Majano-Sosa, allegedly entered the United States in 2022 and was released into the country by the Biden administration. He is accused of voting illegally in the 2024 general election. He is also being charged with possessing a pistol that was found in his vehicle at the time of arrest.
Among lawful permanent residents, Karl Paul Fout, from Germany, is alleged to have illegally voted in seven general elections between 2008 and 2024, according to the Department of Justice. Fout has prior convictions related to possessing marijuana and cocaine, the department said. He entered the United States in 1960.
Another lawful permanent resident, Lawton Caswell Broomfield E McKenzie from Jamaica, is accused of voting illegally in three general elections from 2012 to 2024, federal agencies said. He has a criminal history of manufacturing and distributing controlled substances, battery, and assault.
All 10 individuals face various charges including falsely claiming citizenship for registering to vote and voting by an immigrant, Homeland Security said.
