On 6 July 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Meister received an experimental rabies treatment developed by Pasteur and his collaborators after being bitten 14 times by a rabid dog. He survived. This landmark episode helped establish the foundation for modern post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)- a life-saving approach to rabies prevention.

Rabies remains almost invariably fatal once clinical symptoms appear, but timely and appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis can prevent the disease. In India and beyond, tackling rabies requires prompt wound washing, access to vaccines, mass dog vaccination and community awareness. The battle against rabies begins before the bite becomes a death sentence.
