This is not an obituary for a cactus per se. But it's not not an obituary for a cactus.

"I thought Vegas was not representative of what America is all about, but it turns out my adopted city is America, a demographic melting pot that represents all that is good and bad about this country. America, in many ways, has become Vegas."

Hello, Las Vegas! I'm working on a story about cost-of-living affordability. I'd love to chat with locals who have thoughts, especially if you're navigating the housing market.
DM me or reach out at [email protected].
Thank you!

On the eve of POTUS's Nevada trip, a cocktail server at the Peppermill told me she got a $2,500 tax refund this year, after usually getting about $300. She was thrilled.
But she also says business is slower — and people don’t tip as well as they used to.
“I make enough to where I have money where I can pay all my bills. But I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily able to save as much as I’d like,” she said. “I’m right there where I’m doing all right but I’m not necessarily able to set myself up for the future.” politico.com/news/2026/04/16…

Reports of Vegas' death are greatly exaggerated.
While the middle class cuts back on extras, wealthy tourists keep showing up. The share of visitors from families making over $150k recently doubled.
The pattern echoes what's happening across the US:

After three wonderful years, my job at The Christian Science Monitor was eliminated as part of a newsroom restructure. My final story — about a cat sanctuary in Hawaii — published this week.

Quick reversal! What Vought told us at yesterday's @csmonitor breakfast:
"We have concerns with these programs. They’re the ones that we’re going to study the most, and we’re going through that process. ... We’re aware of the senators’ opinions, and we do take them seriously."
BIG NEWS!
@RussVought45 just informed me that the @usedgov is releasing crucial funds to states that support after school and summer education programs.
This is in direct response to a letter I led my @SenateGOP colleagues on earlier this week!
