I want companies to make a major commitment to ensuring their employees are thriving and flourishing, not just whether they’re motivated enough to put effort into their jobs.
We need to move away from #engagement and toward #WellBeing.
I want companies to ask more meaningful questions about employees’ lived experiences, and I want leaders to take responsibility for the answers.

Things you can not buy with money, but you can obtain with character and genuine interest in the welfare of others:
“You cannot buy enthusiasm; you cannot buy initiative; you cannot buy loyalty; you cannot buy the devotion of hearts, minds and souls. You have to earn those things.”

It’s not AI and I can’t believe everyone just goes along with it.
Telling leaders to care more about their people isn't enough. Organizations must make it possible, expected, and consequential for leaders to do so.

For decades, we’ve celebrated the “hero #CEO”—the visionary leader who personally drives transformation through force of will.
But what if that model is actually holding organizations back?
On my new #LeadFromTheHeart podcast, the author of The Catalyst @CEO, Constantine Alexandrakis and I discuss why the most effective leaders today have stopped trying to have all the answers.
I think this is where #leadership is headed.
Please don't miss!

A huge problem in most companies is that they've defined effective #leadership too narrowly: they evaluate and grade manager performance without adequately considering how results are achieved and what they do to people.

Are Companies About to Repeat Their Biggest Mistake With Employee #Engagement?
For years, organizations invested heavily in improving engagement, yet the numbers barely moved. Now, many are approaching employee #WellBeing as another #HR initiative.
I believe that's a fundamental mistake and explore why in my new @FastCompany article.

The #CEO of #AmericanExpress is the newest to announce layoffs because of #AI, but before #AI justifies eliminating any jobs.
They do this because no one pushes back on AI as the reason.
Says the #CFO:
The company's #leadership is seeking to "reduce layers and increase spans of controls, so that we can automate and take advantage of AI in the coming quarters and the coming years."

Even if the manager cannot solve the problem, it's always encouraging to be heard and to know you're not alone.

Treating people with dignity is not hard. It just takes effort.
It doesn’t mean you can’t make difficult decisions. You can. You just don’t have to be a jerk - which is what seems to be the common default.
If you have the feeling your organization doesn't care about you, you're not alone.
In 2020, 49% of US workers felt their company cared about them -- a percentage, per Gallup, that has fallen to an all-time low of 21% today.

Super cool! Something more important than the bottom line? It's not the most important. "People First" should be the focus. How about creating a workspace where people can flourish and grow? It's certainly not a given that you have to lay people off. Torani hasn't laid anyone off since the GREAT DEPRESSION! How cool is that?
#Torani Syrup hasn't had an employee laid off since the Great Depression -- including over the last 35 years under one CEO.
The philosophy is that finding ways to retain people when the company is under stress builds a more loyal, trusting and effective employee base.
It's an $800mm company that proves layoffs are never inevitable and always a #leadership choice.

He's an example of a leader who prioritizes curiosity, learning, humility and valuing the people around him.

People are much more likely to help when you explain why you're asking.
For example, instead of saying, “Could you help me with this project?” try, “Could you help me with this project? I want to make sure it has your approval before Friday's deadline.”
The reason gives people context and makes it easier for them to say yes.

Per the WSJ, two-thirds of #CFOs admit to being taunted into doing something unethical, "I thought you were the kind of CFO who found a way."
Sadly, only half said they pushed back.
Fudge one quarter's numbers and they usually will be expected to fudge the next quarter's numbers as well.
