OBJECTS IN FOCUS: The Marlow Stocks When the museum first opened, we recovered the Marlow Stocks from Bucks County Museum, where they had been in store for many years. Before that, they used to be on The Causeway in Marlow and were last used in 1858.

It was a form of corporal punishment and public humiliation, allowing the public to throw fruit or vegetables, often rotten, even liquid. Throwing other objects wasn't encouraged but likely did occur, especially if a local person had been terribly offended by the prisoner.

Our stocks have a device on the upright post to manacle a prisoner by the wrists for a beating/strapping/whipping, as decreed appropriate. You can easily see how the stocks come apart to insert or remove a prisoner’s legs, with heavy padlocks in place to prevent escape.

Objects in Focus 15: River Finds: To operate a motorboat on the Thames you need a licence. When obtained these are usually placed where river officials and Lock Keepers can see them, often on the windscreen rather like the old car tax discs.

The second photograph shows an ancient earthenware pot, some 5½ inches tall and 9 inches diameter, with a single handle. The interior is glazed and the exterior base shows signs of burning. It might a cooking pot. But there is no lip for pouring and only one handle.

It has been suggested that it is Roman Samianware, so we are seeking professional advice, especially on use, age and originality. What is your opinion? Let us know!
