The family of Romanch Mahajan, the namesake of the bill to ban horse carriages in the city following his death, talked about their journey in advocating for the law and what they want to see following its passage Thursday.
After the City Council passed a bill to phase out horse carriages in the city by June 2028, members of TWU Local 100, the union representing carriage drivers, held a news conference to voice their opposition and reiterate their plan to take legal action.
“That was a spectacle of the worst kind in there today,” Christina Hansen, steward for TWU Local 100, said. “It’s a tragedy for everybody in this business. It’s a tragedy for the horses, and it’s a tragedy for the city of New York.”

“We have to do it in a way that’s consistent with our values and with the professionalism that we all expect from not just law enforcement and role enforcement, but all of our public activities in New York,” Lieber said.
The City Council voted to pass Romanch's Law on Thursday to ban horse carriages in the city. The carriages would be phased out by June 2028.
Carriage drivers and their union have opposed the ban, and have vowed to file a legal challenge "the minute the ink dries" on the legislation.
The bill now heads to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has said previously he supports its passage, for final approval.
