I just realized I have the biggest non-verified account on Twitter.*
*Except for the others. But at least I am still forced to stick to the 280 character limit, for my benefit and yours.

In this story JD shares that he panicked & took his kid to the emergency room when he was totally fine. Instead of being relieved by that good news he got upset that there are translators in the hospital helping the sick. This must’ve been before he was Catholic.

America has made large strides against crime in my lifetime but it's still the case that the highest-crime French city has a substantially lower murder rate than Montana to say nothing of actually high-crime US cities.
It's a big problem.

My wife and I were trying to figure out why there's no deposit on hard cider cans in NY. No doubt cause there's a hard cider industry here.
But also "non-carbonated tea"?!
"Snapple must be HQd here," I said. Sure enough they _used_ to be. No longer. Can we take tea off the list?
Is there any alternative explanation as to why robberies declined in the subway and not the rest of the city in these years other than the very conspicuous change in subway policing strategy that was led by Bill Bratton and Jack Maple?

Here is 1990 to 1993, which was got me started down this road, to show how the crime decline started in the subway, when Bratton was Transit Police chief. Great natural experiment. The subway got a lot safer. The streets barely changed at all.
Making charts because... er that is what I do? Comparing NYC subway and NYC "topside" (street) robbery. Using 2016 as a baseline.
Data is sketchy back when. But *if* Transit Police data is to be believed, in 1978 there were <3,000 reported robberies in the subway out of a total of 74,000 in the city. 10 years later? A few more city robberies, but 8,100(!) in the subway.

I'm not in real estate or politics or banking or tax law, but we need to fix the problem of stores sitting vacant for years. It's horrible for the neighborhood. And it makes no economic sense, at least in a world without misguided $ incentives. It doesn't have to be like this.
The Starbucks at the corner of West 93rd St. and Broadway referenced in Alec Baldwin's famous barista tweet has been closed for nearly seven years.
The storefront has sat empty for more than 2,300 days.
The For Rent sign has never come down.
It should be impossible for a storefront on a prime Upper West Side corner to sit empty for so long.

Letting people with severe mental illness and addiction rot and die on the street and completely dominate the public realm is not a progressive ideal. The families that rely on transit, libraries, parks and streets deserve safe, clean, comfortable, corpse free spaces.
At some point every semester, I ask my class what they think of when think of Amsterdam. For the first time 22 years, not a single student said "cannabis" or "prostitution." We're living in a new age. The mayor of Amsterdam will be happy. The Amsterdam Tourism Board, less so.

Owner Parnell St. Aubin was a Munchkin soldier in The Wizard of Oz.
The bar operated on the South Side from 1948 to 1982 and had a low bar and bar stools to accommodate the proprietors.
One of my favorite* themes is white liberals with good skin and nice teeth making life worse for black and brown working people trying to make a living.
*not.

God bless Barack Hussein Obama. I love this man. What a good president (despite what the right AND the left said!)
He always had a good sense of humor and timing.
And FU, all on the left who gave him shit and helped get Trump elected.
.@BarackObama: I am old enough to remember when a president wearing a tan suit was a major national controversy. They were very upset. And I know I looked good in that suit.
