IBM in 1979:
Claude Code wiped our production database with a Terraform command. It took down the DataTalksClub course platform and 2.5 years of submissions: homework, projects, and leaderboards. Automated snapshots were gone too. In the newsletter, I wrote the full timeline + what I changed so this doesn't happen again. If you use Terraform (or let agents touch infra), this is a good story for you to read. alexeyondata.substack.com/p/…

Can’t believe I made it all the way out to @bitcoinconfams to do 5 panels just to be fired from the main stage. Great conference, thank you for having me!

Crypto is being massively stolen from users of various crypto wallets through… 18+ websites - victims have already lost $5,570,000 due to a vulnerability in iOS 18. It’s all because of the DarkSword vulnerability: just open an infected website via Safari and malicious code is already running on your smartphone - passwords, messages, photos, and crypto wallet files (including private keys) are under attack. Update iOS to the latest version as soon as possible. And never ever store photos of your seed phrase in the gallery or write it in Notes!

everyone I know that is actually putting compute in the ground tells me the following: - credit is very much available, LTVs have dipped for some but there is no "credit freeze". - no concerns whatsoever about offtake demand. as robust as it has ever has been. - not particularly concerned about the politics. can work around moratoria. believe incentives will prevail and cities and states won't walk away from billions in tax $. there will always be pockets of power available.

Congrats to @reardencode on crashing out so hard with AI psychosis that he made a bitcoin node entirely in rust with @rbitcoin_org
since 0.8, rbitcoin's consensus engine has been subject to much scrutiny under a variety of lenses. it was used to add an additional rule and refine other rules of @HornetNode 's consensus spec; used to cross-validate @Rob1Ham 's btc-lean spec and contribute to that effort to fully specify bitcoin consensus; subjected to an attempted proof of equivalence in the LLVM IR by @TheBlueMatt ; and much more. honestly, it's fared remarkably well throughout. for that reason, we're revising how we talk about rbitcoin starting with the 0.9 release tomorrow. rbitcoin 0.9 will be Production Ready, unincorporated rather than Production Ready™️. this is a major step toward the real goal of a 1.0 software release that we can proudly call simply production ready. when I started rbitcoin this summer (as some combination of a joke and just to see if I could), I couldn't have imagined that it would come this far or attract so much positive attention. rbitcoin now has commits from 18 people, plus audits, scans, or reviews from many others. it's grown to over 200,000 lines of production code and another 200,000 lines of test code. it's contributed not only to the consensus specification efforts mentioned above, but to a new way of handling esplora and electrum wallet synchronization, additional testing in bitcoin core, bug fixes in rust-bitcoin, and probably more I'm forgetting. to say that I'm thrilled with the progress on rbitcoin would be a massive understatement. so, to everyone who has encouraged my AI psychosis, discouraged it, contributed to it, or contributed to rbitcoin in any way; thank you! special thanks to bitcoin CEO @Rob1Ham who basically strong-armed me into realizing the possibilities of LLM-assisted coding, and to @ProductionReady for still not forking the repo. not to put too fine a point on it, but the tokens for rbitcoin and my travel to @tabconf and the rust-bitcoin summit were funded by donations for rbitcoin. all of my time in building rbitcoin to date has been donated by me.

Let me tell you a story about how unethical Anthropic is. In April, the Anthropic team began heavily courting our engineering team to tell them corporate secrets, technical details, and future plans for @cfosilvia. They pretended their interest was due to our exploding popularity and accelerating compute usage, but it quickly became apparent that Anthropic was fishing for details on how we built our product and why it was so popular. This included the Anthropic team trying to wine-and-dine our engineers, including a infamous steak dinner where someone told our team "don't worry about it, this is on Dario." Our team was not born yesterday, so we quickly realized what was happening and refused to share sensitive information and technical details with the Anthropic team. As we suspected, Anthropic was trying to get information from us, so they could build a competing product. Some people on their team must have a guilty conscious because they messaged us a few days ago to give us "a heads-up" that they were launching a competing product. Thankfully, the Silvia engineering team has been aggressively working to get off the frontier models for the last ~ 6 months. That effort has been highly successful, because our compute costs are ~ 97% lower when we use our own model & hardware, the latency is lower, and the accuracy of answers materially increases as well. The sad thing for Anthropic is they have now released an inferior product and they had to sell their soul to do it. The only thing worse than being a trillion-dollar company that can't beat a 10-person team is being a trillion-dollar company that no one trusts and everyone knows is unethical. Serious investors continue to choose @cfosilvia over ChatGPT, Claude, and other frontier companies because these products are not optimized to solve the actual user problem. Today, Anthropic launched a Claude wrapper that is masquerading as a personal finance product. Best of luck to them. But I will take the Silvia misfits vs the Anthropic losers any day of the week. if you want to support people trying to do things the right way, and help investors be more informed, then consider signing up for Silvia today: silvia.com

The bug is like a joke. On Alpine Linux, type 257 to 1024 characters of anything and you get root. 💀

‼️ BREAKING: OpenSSH has rushed out a fix for a critical flaw that lets attackers log into some Linux servers without the right password. The team learned of the bug a day earlier. OpenSSH's Damien Miller says long embargoes now mostly help attackers, because AI agents rediscover bugs, sometimes within hours. It hits Linux systems on the musl C library with PAM off, such as Alpine Linux. Miller told admins to disable password logins or SSH itself "IMMEDIATELY". Version 10.6p2 works around it. Systems on glibc or PAM are not affected, and Miller says the root cause sits outside OpenSSH.

People who work in software, and are skeptical of AI’s ability to provide security support should ask themselves: Are you better at understanding and writing software than the Linux kernel team?
Our security researchers built an autonomous cyber vulnerability discovery, exploitation, and patching pipeline. In a single run with an upcoming cyber model, it validated and generated patches for 948 local privilege escalation vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel at a total API cost of $1.2 million.
