Today I had the closing lecture of my cryptography course at the University of Twente. The lecture focused on Oblivious Transfer, a fundamental primitive that enables several other secure computation protocols. We explained OT first in terms of a card game, and then moved to the mathematics behind it. Last week we also exhibited the same game at the CipherFair event at Radboud University, organized within the CipherEngine project, where school pupils played the protocol with cards and figured out how two people at a date can understand if they like each other (avoiding potential embarrassment!); basically, how two parties can securely compute the logical AND function without revealing their secret input bits. Beside having a lot of fun (which is always good in teaching), I developed these activities and lecture for an idea I've been playing around for a while: using games is a great metaphor to convey the concepts behind complex mathematical results, which cryptography is full of. And this can be adapted to different audiences, be they school or university students, or even the general public in outreach events. In all this, I wanted to thank the people who helped me in bringing this idea to life: particularly Femke Weijsenfeld, who helped me in developing the activities and presenting them at the CipherFair event in Nijmegen, and Annachiara Ornaghi for the beautiful design of the cards. Also, thanks a lot to Greg Alpar and Stjepan Picek for inviting us to the CipherFair event. The first quarter has now ended, and in a couple of weeks the second one will start: more games incoming for my next iteration of the Quantum Computing and Post-Quantum Cryptography course! 😉

Quote: "an independent security researcher reported that the keys of eight eMudhra Global TLS intermediate Certificate Authorities were cryptographically weak". Well, yeah, they were weak. A private key should look something like this: 84ac06790886c80c48d31691fd4c0fe9 ce3207f9807f2fe571d6e4ec426d7864 4298fc53df2b92566970e757ac998c34 Instead, their keys looked like this: 00000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000004
Global TLS Intermediate CA incident: We’ve updated our incident page with how it happened, who is affected (one US customer ecosystem), what’s not affected, and what we’re putting in place. We will publish the root cause once our investigation is complete. 👉emudhra.com/en/post/certific…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
eMudhra minimizes the scope by claiming only "one US customer ecosystem" is affected. In reality, 8 of its CA certificates had catastrophically weak private keys (one being simply the number 4), allowing anyone to forge trusted HTTPS certificates for any website on the internet.blog.google/security/prote…

I maintain that the best metaphor for mathematical work is highly constrained narrative or scriptwriting. Definitions are characters, theorems are plot points, a paper is a script, proof is "tightness" of the script. The goal is to write a good script that is also tight. 1/

yikes: via HDNL 1 Shor "only" gets to you to decrypt one secure channel session, whereas 1 Shor'd PKI cert or auth cert/token can get you access to a whole network/org (modulo the detection heuristics and other auth factors etc.)
Replying to @exocognosis
First quantum attack is expensive and will not be HNDL. Instead it will target powerful widely trusted access keys. If you only forgot to roll one access key you’re in trouble.

Spare some love for the least-heralded TCS result from the OpenAI-pocalypse: Factoring polynomials over any prime field in *deterministic* polynomial time (w/exponent 10^12, lol). This "closes" an annoying gap in crypto: unconditional DPT square roots modulo a prime = 1 mod 16.

Wow!!! Real RSA-1024 signature forgery. Interestingly, it doesn’t break the key but uses a different approach by Joux et al. that was known but pretty much ignored. eprint.iacr.org/2026/2131.pd…

Just posted a survey of pseudorandom codes! They're a fascinating new crypto primitive equivalent to robust and quality-preserving watermarks. The survey is a handbook for researchers & has many open questions. Enjoy! eprint.iacr.org/2026/2162
